Teen murdered in front of parents in Benque

Esvin Ernesto Reyes

While the revelry was taking place down south in celebration of Garifuna Settlement Day, in the west a teenager lost his life in a dangerous stretch along the border. The victim is sixteen year old Esvin Ernesto Reyes who along with his father Estevan and mother Teresa set out along the Mopan River heading to Melchor. According to his family, armed and masked bandits held them up demanding money just after seven o’clock on the morning of the nineteenth. Esvin was shot as he and his mother attempted to get away. News Five’s Andrea Polanco reports.

Around seven-thirty on Saturday morning, Teresa Reyes, her husband, Estevan and son, sixteen year old Esvin Ernesto Reyes, set out to Melchor to visit a sick family member. The Reyes family, who lives just two minutes away from the Belize Western Border, here at this small wooden house, decided to take a route commonly travelled between the two countries. They set out from right behind their home, going down this stretch near the Mopan River, leading through this overgrown picado road which would take them straight over into neighboring town of Melchor De Mencos. But on the way there, they were met by two armed men who demanded money:

Teresa Reyes, Mother of the deceased

“My husband decided to go, we decided to go visit one of my daughters in Melchor, she is sick so since we live close by the river, we decided to go by Melchor to visit her. And on our way going to Melchor by the river bank, three of us, some assailants came out from the bushes. The assailants came out and they said stop, ‘gimme all the money or I will shoot you’. Her husband said, ‘I don’t have no money, you can kill me but I don’t have no money.”

But the armed men later pulled their weapons on the family although they said they didn’t have any money. And just some one hundred and fifty yards away from the border, the sixteen year old was fatally shot in the mid-section of the back, right before his parents’ eyes. He died here under these trees through this small road along the Mopan River.

“My son only turned around and that is where he got shot and he just leaned over and dropped on the ground. She says my son got shot in the back, ih drop on the ground. Her husband said, you have killed my son and I am going to call the police right now. He said stay there and he will go to Benque to report it so police could come. That is what they did and minutes later, the assailants came back and tried to lift up the little boy—maybe the intentions was to throw him to the river. By the same time, the police from Benque was coming.”

The two men believed to be Guatemalans, were fully masked in black clothing, and armed with 9mm pistols according to the police report. They later tried to remove the boy’s body but they made good their escape by swimming across the river when they heard the police approaching:

Teresa Reyes

“Upon hearing the noise that the police was coming, they jumped to the river and swam across going to Guatemala. I believe they are from Guatemala because they swam across the river and went across and all the things happening is across from Guatemala. All black; everything was black. Both of them had weapons.”

Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.

But to news time tonight, no arrests have been made; the suspects are known to be on the other side of the border.

Why do we accept “A DANGEROUS STRETCH ALONG THE BORDER”????

Better question, WHY DOES PM BARROW ACCEPT IT?

A government’s FIRST OBLIGATION is to defend its borders and protect its citizens. Without a border, you don’t have a nation at all.

I’ll support any candidate that will DEFEND OUR BORDERS.
