World GIS Day tagged in Belize City

Today marks world G.I.S. Day. G.I.S. is the acronym for Geographic Information System. It doesn’t sound like much but it’s used in our daily lives. And if you have a modern phone, chances are it uses G.I.S. technology. Earlier today, experts in GIS hosted a throng of students from many Belize City schools at a GIS Expo at the Best Western Belize Biltmore.  News Five’s Jose Sanchez talked to primary school and high school students about which aspect of GIS technology has them hooked.

“This is the first time in Belize that we have done something to this magnitude. So we have a number of exhibitors that are here today to help showcase what GIS is all about—graphic information systems—how it’s used in our daily lives. What careers you can go into using GIS. We also have games and activities for the students to be involved in as well. Today we have with us Belize Elementary School, Grace Primary, we also have Horizon Academy, Bethel.”

The noise level was high and many of the booths were swamped with intelligent students, eager to learn even more.

“Well I learned in our daily lives, GIS is used all around the world and celebrated by everyone almost—in all places: Jamaica, Australia to everywhere. It is used by the Ministry of Health, it is used by the police, by land information systems and that can help us today by learning more about it. I have used it by finding a location where I would like to go. Like when you find a place on the map using the globe, GIS will help you because you’ll find it on Google earth. It’s almost like that.”

“GIS is a software based component used to enhance geography. So geography enables us to look at things around us, know about things around us, how they got there, where they are and things like that—like our rivers, our mountains, our desserts and things like that. So GIS allows us to integrate all that spacial information to answer questions that are important to climate; that are important to where the grains came from; where we get our food from.”

“This is an actual drive test that we do and we use this information to optimize our cell sites to see where we have drop calls, where we need improvement in signal so if we need to change an antenna, to shift antenna. But we use it to optimize our cell sites so that we have optimal signal for our cellular users. We do use GIS because how it picks up information is through the GPS that we have here. And so GIS it’s a part of our everyday tool. Without these types of equipments, you actually go out and do it the manual way, but now we no longer have to do it. We just do the drive test and extract the information now and then make life much easier than doing it manually.”

“I believe that the technology that GIS represents or creates can help me in my studies because as a geography major, I feel that the technology that they give me will benefit me in learning more on how to develop my knowledge in geography. I was see the designing competition booth and it looks really interesting—some of the topics I have seen being portrayed.”

Brandon Bennett, Student, Horizon Academy

“GIS stands for Geographic information systems and it is also interconnected with different nations throughout the world and help them identify geographical locations not only in Belize City or the country of Belize or the entire world. Actually this is the first time I heard about GIS. I’m gonna use it more because me and a couple of my friends are going to enter in the build your own city and town competition. We’re hoping to win the laptop.”
