Penta paint up the Place

While the House of Culture was crowded with young students, winners of the fourth annual Penta Paint Up Di Place Competition were at the Image Factory in Belize City to pick up their awards.  Of the many entries in this year’s contest the winning pieces in the primary and secondary school categories came from St. Joseph School and St. John’s College respectively.   Amir Smith, a third form student at SJC, won a grand prize of five hundred dollars for his depiction of the nation as inspired by Belizean national hero Philip Goldson.

“The inspiration for this piece is inspired when I heard the quote from Philip Goldson, “the time to save our country is now. The two hands of different colors represents the two races—the different races that are united together. The two hands hold everything that is about Belize. You have the Belize flag, you have Leila Vernon there, you have the national bird, the coral reef and so on. It is held up high over the earth. It symbolizes that we should cherish what our country is all about and that is how I got my inspiration on this painting.”

Carlo Habet, Marketing Manager, Habet Group

“About four years ago I was in the company. And while I grow up in the company this is now my first real role in the company and I was doing marketing. So I thought to myself, what is it that defines Brothers Habet and to me I kept coming back to the same thing; a respectable corporate citizen we’ve been known for our initiatives like this; like we have the Penta Kite Fest and people expect us to do community things. Now I thought what’s a new exciting way to do these things? Paint. It’s natural to me. You sell paint, paint can be used in exciting ways and this is something with paint. So we came up with this idea for the competition. Penta does something similar in Jamaica for instance but it’s a much smaller scale. I thought I want to blow this up. I want to have this be a year-long initiative and that’s kinda where it started.”

Winners of the Penta Paint Up Di Place Competition will also have a mural of their work painted unto the wall of their school building.
