Int’l Media Coverage on Doctor’s murder in Belize

Lawrence Johnson

On Friday night we told you that four to five men were detained in connection with the murder of sixty eight year old retired chiropractor, Dr. Lawrence Johnson of Ontario Village. Today we can confirm that all the detainees, from surrounding communities have been released and Belmopan police say investigations are still ongoing. Johnson, who is said to have left New Mexico in the U.S in 1993, moved to Belize and opened the Iguana Creek Resort at mile fifty-six and a half on the Western Highway. But Johnson’s peace was interrupted at his farm last week Wednesday, when six armed men invaded his home and beat him to death. Johnson’s employee, Julio Funes, was also attacked. The brutal murder of the retired doctor and philanthropist has been picked up by the foreign media. According to the Daily Mail Johnson’s son, Quinn Johnson said ‘Belize was actually a very nice country. He says that even though his father had retired from chiropractic work in the U.S., he spent nearly twenty years offering free treatment to locals in Belize.

If the Jewel gets an international reputation for violence, it can devastate our tourism industry. [Yes, it is extremely violent, but until now it has remained our little secret.]

The police and DPP better get this case RIGHT, and the murderers better HANG. A lot of our future depends on punishing the killers fiercely.

  2. Earl Grey says:

MAYBE…….Just MAYBE…..international forces will step in and GIVE THE BELIZE POLICE THE TRAINING and resources THAT THEY NEED.

THIS MAKES US LOOK BAD IN THE EYES OF THE WORLD…. AND WITH NO SUSPECTS………

MAYBE……Just MAYBE……OUR GOVERNMENT WILL ASK FOR HELP to TRAIN OUR POLICE.

IS THIS HOW WE BELIZEANS THANK OUR BENEFACTORS?????????????

  3. from the west says:

Dr. Johnson was an arrogant American taking advantage of Belizeans. As they say in Belize, what goes around, comes around. Even though Dr, Johnson ripped off a lot of people, I dont believe he deserved this cruel death, but it should be noted that this is not just another robbery/murder.

  4. Jeeboo says:

Very well said “from the west”. To my knowledge he had no friends here and perhaps just made enemies with everyone he had contact with. People that are familiar with him will all tell you that this is “not just another murder”. But to the police, GET THE KILLERS … NOW. A killer is a killer. You and everyone else knows who did it.

………….! i feel so bad for the doc and his family. sorry to hear this bad and very sad news

  6. Daughter says:

I don’t care if my father was in your opinion, “an arrogant American, taking advantage of Belizeans.” Don’t you have enough decency to not say such harmful things about the dead? Have you never taken advantage of anyone’s generosity? Have you never acted arrogant? Have you always given to others what you can? Are you without blame? No, you are human, just like my father was. And no, he didn’t deserve what happened to him. The men who did it don’t even deserve that to happen to them. What goes around comes around? really, but yet he didn’t deserve this cruel death? why don’t you get your opinions straight. He had no friends there? Actually he had plenty of friends there. The worker almost gave his life for him. Idiots. You know who did it? Really? If you all know who did it, then stand up for yourselves and your country and go forward to the police, the embassy, the media. Someone. Oh no, you would rather get on the internet and hide behind your fears and leave your country to suffer in the spotlight. Belize is a beautiful country full of great people, except people like who are scared enough to go on letting these brutal men ruin it.
