Coalition not giving up on drilling concerns

Late this afternoon, the Belize Coalition to Save Our Natural Heritage, of which SATIIM and Oceana are both members, today issued a press release affirming its support in SATIIM’s call for transparency in government’s approval of permits to oil companies for exploration within protected areas.  According to the release, secrecy in contracts and operations of the extractive industries, including the petroleum industry, has long been associated with corruption and the failure of a resource rich country to further human development.  While a specific plan has not been hatched as yet Choc says SATIIM remains in dialogue with its umbrella organization to determine a future course of action.

Greg Ch’oc, Executive Director, SATIIM

“We sent them the statement that we have issued and I will be and have been in discussion with them to determine what exactly our course of action will be.  You may know, Isani, and based on legal opinions that we have received that the government, under the appeals process with the Maya Land Rights case, the government did make an undertaking that they would not issue any new permits in the area until the appellate court gave its judgment and here we are with U.S. Capital Energy operating in the communities.  And perhaps it is no coincidence that we have yet to receive a copy of the permit that has been granted to U.S. Capital Energy.”

SATIIM is demanding that the government respects the rule of law; environmental justice; economic equality; and the rulings of the highest courts in Belize.
