New science lab for Excelsior High

But there’s some positive news that is putting one high school ahead. Over the years Excelsior High School has not received its fair share of financial support. The school has experienced many struggles to keep its doors open but with a very supportive staff, Excelsior continues to provide education to the youths from the surrounding area. Earlier today the Faber’s Road school and students had a lot to smile about. They have received a brand new science lab courtesy of UNESCO.  And according to the school’s principal, it is their first dedicated science lab.

“Since the school started we never had a dedicated science lab. The teachers used to make do with whatever space they could find—usually in the classrooms with whatever equipment and supplies they could put their hands on. So the actual hands on experience in the science classes were limited to just what the teachers could muster up.”

Jose Sanchez

“So how did you come about to actually get a dedicated science lab?”

Gayle Thompson

“Early last year, in 2010, the Ministry of Education sent out to all school a call for proposal from UNESCO. We responded to that call and two of our science teachers collaborated and submitted a proposal after much adjustments and readjustments it was accepted and the grant was made to the school to fund the lab.”

“And what sort of equipment you have in the lab now?”

Gayle Thompson

“We have all of the equipment that the school needs for the sutddents to carry out experiments and hands on practical experiences. We have an incubator, we have microscopes, test tubes, Bunsen burners—all of the equipment that a science lab would normally have.”

“Well when I first started, we didn’t have a science lab and ti kinda created problems because we didn’t have the hands on experiments and so. So this new lab that we have here will definitely be beneficial to all students by having hands on experiences that we will have. It would be beneficial to us because as a fourth former, we will be able to do the science experiments such as the science labs. We would use different things in the lab such as the incubator and so forth and it will help us with our CXCs and hopefully I get a Grade 1 in CXC this year.”

The lab comes at a most appropriate time since students will be using it to prepare for CXC exams.
