Businessman to sue because cops locked him up

Joseph Budna

A San Ignacio businessman who also spends a great deal of time across the Benque border is complaining because of frequent run-ins with the police. Joseph Budna was travelling in his white Kia with dark tinted windows when he was pulled over by gun toting cops. He felt humiliated because after conducting an on the site search, he was handcuffed and dragged to the San Ignacio Police Formation.  And though nothing was found, he felt further humiliation because he was locked up for the night. That is why Budna says he’s hired Attorney Hubert Elrington to represent him in a suit against the Police Department.

Joseph Budna, Suing Police Department

“They locked me down in the cell, took away my property and as a result at about 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, police constable, PC Jones arrived at the police station with a pan of tools in his hand in civilian clothing. They took me out of the cell and had me observe the search that he was carrying out—opening the door covering and all these stuff; damaging two three doors of the vehicle. And after searching this vehicle they found nothing illegal. They wanted to hold the vehicle because they wanted to check with Interpol. So they went inside and spoke with one Inspector Mai who instructed them to release my persons with all my belongings with my vehicle—that everything is clear; nothing illegal. After leaving the station, I contacted my attorney Mr. Elrington immediately and informed him about the detention which I believe was illegal and we’re taking legal action upon this detention because it’s first time the police have been harassing me.”

“Was it you who picked up some people on Albert Street that resulted in a shooting incident?”

Joseph Budna

“That’s right. That shooting incident occurred couple months ago and that was persons who I knew. The police reported that I didn’t know them but I am saying these are persons that I knew. I’m not crazy to go around picking up people. I knew them and one of them pulled out a firearm; they tried to rob me and so on and so forth. The case is before the court and the court will decide.”

“Wasn’t there a case after that of something involving marijuana and a minor in a vehicle that you were driving?”

Joseph Budna

“Well let me tell you that case is before the court whereby I was in the company of a family member, who is a minor, and I can tell you that the police conducted a search upon the vehicle. They did not find drugs inside the vehicle but they claim they found it inside the vehicle. I don’t want to spit out all this information because the case is before the court, but the matter will be settled very soon. The court will make a decision upon this because there was one more person that was not detained within this incident. The person was allowed to walk; an ex-police officer.”

In May, Budna was intercepted on the Benque Road in a vehicle that bore a Guatemalan license plate. Cops detained him for three parcels, which allegedly contained one thousand seven hundred and eighty four grams of suspected cannabis. And in January, Budna was car jacked and almost shot.
