Ministers show support for Santi Campaign

While Williams and Cansino are gearing up, Santiago ‘Santi’ Castillo, the frontrunner, is already on the campaign trail leading up to December Fourth. A number of politicians have come forward openly stating who they are supporting and as for Santi, some politicians are rallying behind him, including, Council Roger Espejo and Edmond ‘Clear the Land’ Castro. But there is a political powerhouse backing Santi. Mesop Area Representative and Housing Minister, Michael Finnegan has the safest seat in the country. He bested candidates of both U.D.P. and the P.U.P. percentage wise in the last general elections. Finnegan, who is also very close to the prime minister, walked with Santi this evening on the campaign trail. With this great show of support from this senior party member, Santi is well on the way to the head of the race. Santi says he has a number of plans for the constituency since he brings with him the experience and knowledge of his division. Today News Five caught up with Castillo, Finnegan and other supporters on the campaign trail.

Santiago ‘Santi’ Castillo, U.D.P. Caribbean Shores Aspirant

Santiago ‘Santi’ Castillo

“Well I feel that I have more experience than the other candidates. I feel I have a proven track record. I am a people’s person. I’ve been around Belizeans and grassroots people from I’ve known myself and I live in Caribbean Shores and consequently that’s why I am here in this are right now which is Caribbean Shores to ask them for their support.”

Andrea Polanco

“So Santi over the past couple of days we’ve seen a number of politicians grouping up with some of the aspirants. Tell us who are some of the people you have in your corner?”

Santiago ‘Santi’ Castillo

“Well the camera will show who they are, there are many behind me. I have Mr. Finnegan, one of the generals on Election Day. I have Mr. Castro and for right now I will just say those two names. Of course my endorsements came from Mr. Finnegan, from Mr. Henry Young and from Mr. Sedi Elrington, all senior people in the United Democratic Party so I am very confident that with my team including Roger Espejo, I will have a successful run at this candidacy.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay, so Santi I see a number of people behind you who I believe are your supporters. Speak to us about what’s in place in terms of your machinery going forward leading up to the convention?”

Santiago ‘Santi’ Castillo

“Well I already have very good machinery behind me including Ms. Claudette Ingleton right here on my left who has been affiliated with Caribbean Shores for years. I have many other people on the ground. I have Mr. Roger Espejo, Mr. Kareem Berjes. I believe my machinery is well oiled, especially having just found out, all those  behind me, including the big yellow man, so I believe the machinery is well, well, well oiled. So umm, and the Mesopotamia Committee behind me as well. In fact if the camera would roll over there you’ll see some of the people over there as well. And you might remember that I only found out about this officially when Mr. Perdomo stepped down. Believe it or not, it’s been only forty eight hours.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay. So in moving forward we can see you all hitting the ground in the constituency itself, because I see already one of your supporters wearing the shirt. What else can we expect to see up around with the name ‘Santi’?”

Roger Espejo

Santiago ‘Santi’ Castillo

“Well we been on the ground. We been on the ground from the announcement was made Wednesday night, Thursday nigh, it will continue. I believe that yes banners will play a role, shirt will play a role. But I want to meet the people. I want to meet the people of Caribbean Shores.”

Andrea Polanco

“Santi what’s the feeling going forward with all these people in your camp; some major power players in the United Democratic Party?”

Santiago ‘Santi’ Castillo

“Personally for me it’s a great feeling. There are people in the U.D.P. who recognize that my family and I have been U.D.P. supporters all our lives. I ran for the U.D.P. in 1993 so it’s a good feeling that I have an investment in the U.D.P. which is paying for itself back and with the machinery I have and those people around me and with the plans we have for Caribbean Shores I am really confident and I respect all the other candidates, they’re all good people. I love them all but at the end of the day only one can win and that one, I will ask the people to be me.”

Roger Espejo, Councilor, Supporting Santi

“First and foremost let me say that all the other candidates are very good candidates that goes without saying. To put it simply, all of them are people of success, but Santi is someone of value and that’s where the distinction is made and that’s why I decided to support Santino Castillo.”
