Cruise Ship Tourist charged with Obstruction

Christal Poyner

There was a major spectacle on North Front Street on Thursday afternoon as a female cruise visitor was roughed up by policemen. But today, it was forty-one year old US National, Christal Poyner, facing a Magistrate in court. Reports are that Poyner was spotted by police with a stick of weed and she quickly swallowed it as the cops moved in on her. Witnesses say the two male officers choked her and dragged her on the ground in front of a crowd that was infuriated by the way she was manhandled. After a day and a half in lockdown, Poyner was taken before Magistrate Roberto Ordonez where she was arraigned for Resisting Arrest, Obstruction of Justice and Harm against Police Constable Yadira Jones. Poyner pleaded not guilty to the three charges and told the court that she is still in shock about the incident. Magistrate Ordonez explained that since she is not a Belizean, the court cannot offer her bail but he would expedite her trial. The charge of resisting arrest was later dismissed because the charge presented by the court prosecutor was incomplete. The charge of Harm was also dropped because Magistrate Ordonez noted discrepancies in the testimonies of WPC Jones and Tourism Police Officer Arturo Flowers. Late this evening, Poyner was only found guilty of Obstruction. She was fined two hundred and fifty dollars to be paid immediately since she is not a Belizean. Due to the late evening conviction, the cashier had already closed for the day and Poyner has been remanded until Monday when she can pay her fine.

Obstruction means what? She froze when she was choked, or was having an obstruction in her breathing?

#6 homicide rate in the world and cops are choking visitors. Belize, a great place to visit for an experience of a lifetime, death included.

  2. Chitown says:

Some how these cruise ship visitors think they can come ashore to buy weed. Seems like they all think Belize is a place where criminality is encouraged; are they correct?

Big picture…Stupid people are turning away lots of $ by arresting and treating tourists for smoking a joint. It’s not like tourists are committing high crimes and misdemeanors. Come on… use your heads. In NYC the police commissioner has ordered giving tickets to weed smokers and most cops don’t even bother with this small stuff. Choking and slamming down a female tourist deter tourist from visiting our shores, spending money and contributing to our poor economy. Come on people look at the big picture.

  6. cali says:

What is the big up roar. this is the law, and the police was doing their job. Tourist or not weed is illegal, i dont think no one is above the law no matter ware they come from.

  7. Storm says:

To me, if there are “discrepancies” between the testimony of the officers — that just means ONE OR BOTH OF THEM LIED TO THE JUDGE — the whole case should have been thrown out.

How can we convict people where officers are caught lying? If we do that, officers will just keep on lying.

If anything, when an officer lies, the case should be thrown out, and the officer thrown into the Graybar Hotel.

  8. shy says:

Instead of victimizing the tourists i really would like to know when they will start arresting the Belizeans who harass the tourists until they buy it. I find it outrageous that these officers would arrest this woman because they saw her near a suspected drug dealer according to them yet they target her and not the man that they dam well know sells it.

  9. Charlie Price says:

TOURISM ….IS NOW OUR BREAD & BUTTER. Why is the police trying to mess it up.

THIS MAKES BELIZE LOOK BAD TO PEOPLE WHO MAY WANT TO VISIT.

The police know the drug dealers….WHY WERE THEY NOT ARRESTED??

Stop Terrorizing people for a stick of weed…..

  10. Eye In The Sky says:

Beautiful. They are murderers running around Belize and these two cops have to pick on a female tourist. I am sure no one in that ship will ever go back to Belize. It has nothing to with being above the law; it’s about the police not having their priorities in order. Why not go after the gangs running around with guns? Was this tourisdt threatening anyone? And to keep her locked up for days just to pay a $250 fine? and to choke her too? It makes Belize look really bad. SHAME SHAME SHAME.

Hello everyone who has read this news. I’m a US citizen and has been to Belize about 15 years ago, I have to admit these news have shocked me, for one I think this is a set up by the police, using the chicken and the egg analogy, who is more criminal the drug dealer who harrases tourist to buy the drugs or the tourist buying it. I think an easy fix to all this is to clear the path for tourists to come to belize to enjoy this beautiful country, clear or clean the path meaning arrest or remove these low life people selling drugs to tourists, you guys really have no idea the damage done to the industry of tourism in your country, I was making planes to visit Belize with a couple of friends in the near future and these news really worries me, because makes me think we could get set up even if you don’t buy the drugs anyone there can just place it near you and police will arrest you just to get $250 of fines. to me the whole idea is stupid and retarded.

    These people don’t understand life.
