Southside Construction bids underway

There are several programs underway as different phases of the Southside Alleviation Project.  Infrastructure projects are a main component the government uses to provide employment. Soon bids will be taking place for road works and other constructions but one business may get particular attention because they have found an approach that may do more social good for Belize City. Cisco construction was recently featured on News Five because on a narrow street that was upgraded downtown, the company used at-risk youth who have been featured in several court stories on this newscast.  The Prime Minister announced that the government will support Cisco in its initiative while bids for the next phase of the Southside Project is about to commence.

“Whatever government has to do to continue this program for as long as the gangs hold up their end of the bargain, government will do. We had separate pioneered an initiative with Cisco Construction which source Cisco do the side street between Regent Street and Albert Street in Belize City; that portion of Bishop Street using a new construction method that is labor intensive. We are going to do certainly three maybe four more of those little streets in partnership with Cisco—we are looking at some streets and BWS, I gather are doing some works on both those streets, so we’re gonna have to wait until they are through. The Cisco people have entered bids with respect to the Southside Phase 2 and they certainly have made it clear that any bid they win will be done using the new methodology which they say doesn’t send up the cost any, but which certainly helps in terms of being as I said very, very labor intensive.”

The P.M. said that a loan agreement with IDB would be signed this week for drainage program on the North Side of Belize City.
