Fatal accident on the Western Highway

A hearing impaired Hattieville resident is dead following an accident on Tuesday night between miles ten and eleven on the Western Highway. Shortly before six, the man was riding his bicycle heading home, when he was knocked down by a bus travelling in the same direction. According to several accounts, Dorrel Hyde suddenly appeared in front of the bus on the dark stretch. News Five’s Andrea Polanco reports.

His mangled bicycle was still caught under the bus some thirty minutes later, but fifty-five year old Dorrel Hyde was inside this ambulance fighting for his life. Hyde was riding home when he was knocked down by this bus heading to Mahogany Heights. Coretha Augustine, a passenger of the bus tells us what she witnessed:

Coretha Augustine, Witnessed Accident

“Okay, well I was in the first seat at the front and we didn’t really see the man until the bus hit him because he has no reflectors on his bicycle. He was in the lane which the bus was in and well when we hit him he went under the bus and we came out and saw what happened.”

Andrea Polanco

“In which direction was he travelling?”

Coretha Augustine

Coretha Augustine

“He was travelling going in the direction with the bus towards Hattieville in the same direction that we were going. He was in the same lane with the bus and he swerved in front of the bus and before the driver could swerve away, we already hit him.”

Andrea Polanco

“So he was going in the same direction as the bus but he was still completely on the road?”

Coretha Augustine

“Yes, he was in more or likely the center of the road, the path of the bus.”

Andrea Polanco

“I notice his bicycle is, well a part of it is still under the bus as well?”

Coretha Augustine

“Yes ma’am because the bus rolled over him and I guess well he probably loose himself and the bike just continued to drag on. But we don’t really know cause when the bus hit him, everybody jerked to the front and by the time we stop and he come out he mi deh like a couple feet away from weh di bus mi deh.”

Andrea Polanco

“Okay, so apparently the force of the impact of the collision threw him at a distance?”

Coretha Augustine

“Yes ma’am.”

In an attempt to save Hyde’s life, B.E.R.T personnel can be seen inside this ambulance attending to the injured man. Meanwhile, the evidence of the extent of his injuries lay in middle of the highway where this pool of blood and his cap rested.

Coretha Augustine

“He was bleeding from his face, part of his face is all scraped up and stuff. That’s basically it.”

Andrea Polanco

“So basically just head injuries you saw?”

Coretha Augustine

“Yes head injuries and couple bruises on the hand. It seemed like he broke his shoulder the way his hand was because it was back flat; just a lot of blood and scrape and stuff.”

Andrea Polanco

“Was he able to talk or say anything?”

Coretha Augustine

“No, nothing at all, he was just breathing heavily and wasn’t moving at all.”

Voice of: Sherylee Rhaburn, Cousin of the deceased

“I understand he mi di come from wah funeral weh he mi gone and bury his aunty.”

Andrea Polanco

“So he would regularly ride along this Western Highway?”

Voice of Sherylee Rhaburn

“Instead ah catching the bus he would always ride, he ride all ova Belize. Before I knew it was him, I already know it was him because that dah his hours when he come home.”

Andrea Polanco

“So with this incident, what I’m understanding is that he has some kind of hearing impairment?”

Voice of Sherylee Rhaburn

“Yes, he is deaf. He have problem understanding you suh he dah wah person weh yuh have to tek yuh time with mek he undastand yuh. But beside that he dah wah helpful person.”

When we arrived on site of the accident, Police Officers were still processing the scene. Debris from the accident lay scattered across the highway. Hyde was rushed off to the KHMH but died this morning:

Andrea Polanco

“So I understand he passed away sometime this morning?”

Voice of Sherylee Rhaburn

“Yes. This morning about quarter pass eight my sista call mi and tell mi.”

  1. LOL says:

which is worse-the idiots who ride as if they own the street with no lights or reflectors, or the idiot busdrivers who cant see them and when they do cant stop due to speeding and overtaking?

  2. cyclist says:

every cyclist killed on our highways represents BLOOD on BOOTS and MELVIN HULSE hands, no reflectors, no middle or side line on our highways, what happen to the brand new machine that they bought. No traffic law enforcement with regards to buses on the highway, I see them speeding every single day when we are riding in the mornings..majority of these buses are 30-40 years old. in any other country they would be taken off the road.
