Santi for U.D.P. Caribbean Shores

Santino ‘Santi’ Castillo

The engines are beginning to rev as the political season cranks up and speculation is rife that an early election will be called. There are changes in both the P.U.P. and the U.D.P.  We start with the United Democratic Party, which is sorting out representation in one area that seemingly will soon be up for grabs. Caribbean Shores Area Representative Carlos Perdomo has been deemed a lame duck and at least three individuals are aiming to replace him in the next general elections. While Perdomo has not publicly admitted he is stepping down from electoral politics, all indications are that it will happen sooner than later.  Pundits forecast that businessman Santino ‘Santi’ Castillo is the favorite to replace Perdomo. Today Santi told News Five why he is ready for Caribbean shores.

Santino ‘Santi’ Castillo

“Well Jose, I first got into politics in 1993 when the U.D.P. were contesting that elections with thirty days to the election, I got a call from the then Prime Minister, Manuel Esquivel that nobody wanted to take Belize Rural South. So he asked me if I would try it; he thought that I was a popular guy—I had my band at that time—and so I did. Before that, Glenn Godfrey used to dominate that division by over a thousand votes. He beat me in San Pedro by a hundred and twenty-six votes. I always wanted to get back into politics, but the opportunity didn’t arise. I’m a resident of Caribbean Shores for twenty-seven years; I’ve lived there since 1984. But I would have never challenged Carols Perdomo. Besides the fact that he’s family, I had respect for all the Perdomos are my friends, so I stayed back. However, when I heard the rumors that he might step down, which he still hasn’t, and I heard that there were other people’s names being called; I figured who better person than me? I live yah; I dah wah Caribbean Shores bway fi twenty-seven years. So that is how it started.”

Jose Sanchez

“A name that hasn’t been called, Roger Espejo, he’s in your camp, he supports you. How did that come about?”

Santino ‘Santi’ Castillo

“Well for people to know, Roger and I are first cousins as well. I am related to the Perdomos on my father’s side. I am related to Roger Espejo on mother’s side. Roger’s father is my uncle. My mother is Roger’s aunt. So I went to see Roger for the same reason and he told me that he was not running and he would pledge his full support and camp behind me and that is how it is.”

Jose Sanchez

“Well as you know, the cameraman George and I are both residents of Caribbean Shores.”

Santino ‘Santi’ Castillo

“And as you know, I’ve already asked you for your votes.”

Jose Sanchez

“Yes. But now, tell us why we should vote for you?”

Santino ‘Santi’ Castillo

“Well I don’t want to jump the gun, Jose because remember Carlos Perdomo has not stepped down and he doesn’t have to. If he does and the Prime Minister calls a convention—I suspect it will be within thirty days of Carlos Perdomo stepping down so that we will get ready for the general elections. I will deal with the convention first. The fortunate thing is that Roger Espejo has some great ideas for the constituency already and I have some of my own. So we will amalgamate those; we will put those both together. But Jose everybody wants basic things in a constituency: they want safety, patrol for the neighborhood—neighborhood watch—they want good streets and no garbage. Let’s just start with those three. I can’t make any promises; I haven’t even run for the convention as yet. But these are the things that would be on the forefront of my mind as I think would be for most residents.”

Jose Sanchez

“Looking at the other people whose names have been thrown out, do you see any difficulty overcoming them in a convention?”

Santino ‘Santi’ Castillo

“Michael Singh and Ann Marie. Let me make it very clear—both my friends; I like both of them. Andrew Ordonez is also my friend, but we race against each other and after we finish racing, whether he or I win, we shake hands. I’m running a clean convention. I have nothing bad to say about Michael Singh, nothing bad to say about Ann-Marie.  I just feel that I can offer more to the people of Caribbean Shores of which I have been a resident for twenty-seven years. It’s a tailor made division for me than the other two candidates; simple as that.”

Jose Sanchez

“So if you do get in, we will see paved streets, fixed drains, we are going to see security at night and neighborhood watches; we’re gonna see all of these things?”

Santino ‘Santi’ Castillo

“Well that all depends on remember I have to work with a government where the monies are. But I am prepared to work with my Prime Minister, other members of government as best as I could and I will lobby fi my lee share for Caribbean Shores to indeed do the things that you just asked. I will certainly lobby to do the best for Caribbean Shores; I live there.”

Two other candidates have also expressed interest; Ann-Marie Williams of the national Women’s Commission who is known for her project Women in Politics and Mike Singh, who was formerly at the B.T.B. and now at BELTRAIDE. Other names are being floated but we have not been able to confirm whether or not they are entering the Caribbean Shores race.
