Coastguard confirms theft and recovery of boat

In another story that has become an embarrassment; the Belize Coastguard has confirmed that a skiff was stolen from its compound over the weekend. According to Acting Commander Elton Bennett, sometime around eleven pm on Sunday night, thieves went to the coastguard’s pier at the headquarters at mile three.  The thieves swam toward the vessel under the cover of darkness, and unleashed the vessel from its mooring.  The sentry on duty opened fire with his M-16 rifle and while being shot at by the guards, a nearby getaway boat turned on its engine and came to rescue the thieves who then hooked the skiff onto the getaway boat. And though shots were being fired at them, the thieves sped off in a southward direction.  The vessel was a confiscated Colombian skiff, the type that is normally used in drug operations. The coastguard wasted no time in commencing a search party for the stolen vessel. And according to Commander Bennett, by dawn, the vessel was found in the southern Long Caye area. Commander Bennett said because of the quick response, the thieves had to abandon the vessel and hide it in the surrounding mangrove. He believes the motive for the theft was the valuable engine. Since then, security measures at the coastguard headquarters have been stepped up.  CIB with the help of the coastguard have detained two persons for questioning.

I don’t find this embarrassing. This clearly shows the extent to which these criminals will go to get what they want. They have lost fear and don’t mind taking a lot of risk. If they are caught, they know that they stand a good chance of intimidating jurors, witnesses and walking out free. Oh! and let’s not forget the one and only Dickie Bradley who is very versed in finding all the loopholes of getting them off the hook.
The Coast Guard actually acted swiftly in my opinion.
