Relic from 400-600 A.D. returned to Belize

United States agencies have repatriated several prehistoric artifacts to Belize in recent years because both countries have become signatories to the Hold Harmless Release Agreement.  This agreement allows countries to collaborate in matters regarding the protection of cultural property, especially those that are stolen. According to Jaime Awe, the Director of the Institute of Archeology, the U.S. has handed over an Early Classic polychrome ceramic bowl, which dates back to A.D. 400 to 600.

“We recently repatriated this ceramic vessel—it’s an early classic bowl that was confiscated by U.S. immigration and customs agents in the state of New Mexico. And we have now found out that it was taken from this gentleman who had several artifacts in his possession—many of these from other parts of the world—Africa, Asia, etc. But one of the artifacts was this ceramic vessel and they called up this archaeologist who teaches at the University in New Mexico and this guy also works in Belize at site of Ushbenkai in Toledo, his name is Keith Poofer. Dr. Poofer looked at the vessel and was able to authenticate it as being of ancient Maya manufacture. And based on its design, it also looks similar to artifacts found in northern Belize. The U.S. agents took the object to Washington and then formally handed it back to the Belize embassy in Washington D.C. And then during a recent visit to Washington by Diane Haylock, our President at NICH, she then brought the artifact back and repatriated it to Belize and so we have it back safely in Belmopan.”
