13 individuals recognized at Belize Youth Awards

There’s some positive news to report tonight. A group of thirteen young men and women were bestowed with the prestigious youth awards at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts.  They were joined by their peers and families for the happy occasion. The awards are in recognition of their high standards of achievement in different fields. The Ministry of Education spearheads the annual event which coincides with the national day celebrations. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports.

Thirteen persons between the ages of fifteen and twenty-nine were recognized today for making a positive difference in their communities at a time when many of Belize’s youths have turned to a life of crime. Youth for the Future Director, Christine Smith, explains the objective of the Belize Youth Awards.

“The you awards is a platform for providing positive reinforcement for the achievements of our youth. It is an award that recognizes the countless positive interactions of our youth in areas of sports, academia, arts and culture, entrepreneurship etcetera. The Youth Award also serves as a beacon of hope for those who are struggling to find themselves in society by placing up to them their peers as role models.”

One of the most admirable awardees was Kelita Flota, a high school student of Orange Walk who has overcome many obstacles while living with Cerebral Palsy.

“She experiences a range of emotions from day to today; however, Kelita strives to be included in her community even though she has difficulty walking, speaking and getting dressed. Despite her shortcomings, her dream is to study computer technology and inspire others to accomplish their dreams against all odds.”

“Never give up. Let no one or nothing stand in the way of your dreams. Let no one put you down and if they do, take it as a challenge and use it as motivation to prove to yourself and them that you can achieve what you set out to achieve.”

And according to Smith, the awards also set the stage for improved youth services.

“The Belize Youth Award implores us as youth service providers to look at the opportunities that we have made available for our youth and ensure that we position ourselves to provide them with increase opportunities for positive use of time, positive self expression for youth participation and civic engagement. The past year, the international year of youth, has been a pivotal one for youths in Belize. It has seen participation of a record number of youth in sporting activities, drama, art and culture and civic engagement.”
