Cops and robbers; Cops detained for robbery in Free Zone

Emmerson Skyers

Three persons are in custody tonight, including two cops, for a huge robbery at the Commercial Free Zone. The three are expected to be arraigned on Tuesday. The two officers, one from Corozal and the other from San Pedro, are believed to have facilitated the crime, while Emmerson Skyers is alleged to have carried out the daring armed robbery over the weekend. Skyers has been fingered as the culprit who walked into North American International Company on Saturday and relieved its owner of over seventy-thousand Belize dollars in cash. Superintendent Gualberto Garcia, Officer Commanding the Corozal Formation, told News Five today that the robber made off with an additional sum of Mexican and U.S. currencies.

Supt. Gualberto Garcia, Officer Commanding Corozal Police

“On Saturday the tenth of September about 5:15 p.m. police received information of a robbery that occurred at the commercial free zone.  Based on that [information] police proceeded to the Corozal Free Zone where we spoke to a Chinese person by the name of Jin Mei Huang who is the cashier for North America International Company Ltd. which is a business in the free zone.  She reported that sometime about 5:15 p.m. whilst counting money at the cashier she was approached by a male person, dark complexion, who pointed a gun at her and proceeded to rob her.  This person then ran out of the establishment and made good his escape.”

“Can you give us an idea more or less of the sum of money that was taken during the robbery?”

Supt. Gualberto Garcia

“The monies that were taken were in three different denominations.  They were in Mexican currency, Belizean and American.  But approximately a total of about seventy thousand Belize dollars was stolen on Saturday.”

Isani Cayetano

“Any arrests so far?”

Supt. Gualberto Garcia

“At this moment we have not arrested anyone but we have three persons in custody and we are about to arrest them this afternoon.”

Isani Cayetano

“Are you in a position to disclose the identities of these people?”

Supt. Gualberto Garcia

“Well at this time two of these persons are police officers.  One of them works with me here in Corozal and the other police officer works in San Pedro.  The other person is a civilian, he’s from Belize City but he also has an address in Carmelita in Orange Walk Town.”

Isani Cayetano

“Any names or [other relevant information on them]?”

Supt. Gualberto Garcia

“Yeah.  I can say the names.  The police officers are PC Rojas who works here with me and the other person is PC Azueta who works in Corozal, San Pedro, sorry.  And the other person is one Skyers who is from Belize City whom we believe is the actual person who did the robbery.”

Isani Cayetano

“Have any of the monies been recovered at this point?”

Supt. Gualberto Garcia

“No.  As we speak we have a search party in the free zone who are doing some searches in certain areas because we have not recovered any money.  We have not recovered the firearm either that was used.  We do believe that the money may have or may still be in the zone so we are searching but up to this time we have not recovered any such [monies].”

Isani Cayetano

“It would seem as though the instances of crime, and well not necessarily violence but the instances of crime within the free zone, has spiked over the past few months.  Can you tell us whether or not the Corozal Police Formation is addressing this problem systematically?  Are they working with the executives of the free zone?”

Supt. Gualberto Garcia

“One of the main problems that affect us in the free zone are burglaries.  The free zone is privately managed.  They have their own security personnel and we do make checks in the area to prevent but most of the prevention is done by their own personnel.”

Back in mid-April Skyers, a resident of Belize City, was in the news when he, along with three others, were remanded to the Central Prison. The four were arrested for a loaded nine millimeter handgun as well as ammunition and a small amount of marijuana.

If I were Skyers, I would sue the Police Dept for discrimination since they only released his picture and the police officers. We need to see these scumbags faces too!

These idiots would have commited murder in their next attempted heist; crooked cops should be dealt with no mercy from the law. The police have shamed us before, failed us too with their disloyalty, and inhumane act against hard working law abiding citizens.

Death sentence or a very long term imprisonment would serve these idiots just fine.
