No Butane! 3 LPG Companies on strike

There is a countrywide shutdown of butane from three of the country’s largest suppliers of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG). Since Thursday, supplies of LPG have been systematically dwindling by mandate of Belize Western Energy Limited (BWEL), Gas Tomza Limited and Zeta Gas Limited. Jose Mai the General Manager of BWEL told News Five via phone today that they have applied for a price adjustment since June and they have not received it.

“International acquisition price has gone up and they refuse to authorize a price adjustment locally. We have been taking this issue since June and we met on several occasions since then, but we have been unable to resolve because Government has been inflexible. Today, Friday at this hour, we have been unable to come to any understanding with them simply because they have not listened to us. We have not been able to get an audience with the minister himself and we have been dealing directly with the Bureau of Standards. We accepted that, but then we have met all the requirements presented to us by the authorities and still, the minister refuse to listen to our concern or to meet with us. We understand now that he will do so until next week. We advised Belmopan that we would be taking this course of action. We started yesterday by curtailing supply and today we are at a complete standstill.”

“So no one can get butane in Belize City? Or is it across the country?
Via Phone: Jose Mai

“To begin with, Belize City is completely shut down. So no presently in Belize City you cannot get butane and the strike is countrywide.”

The government sent out its own press release this evening saying that it always maintained an open dialogue with importers and producers of LPG.  It says that its position is unflinching and the suppliers should adhere to relevant laws and regulations. Failure to do so reinforces the GOB’s current cases which have been submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

  1. Earl Grey says:

If BNE was not taking all the oil…..WE COULD HAVE BELIZEAN MADE BUTANE at a reasonable price.

  2. reader says:

Erm…they already sell butane at over $30 cheaper than the importers. Plus…what does crude have to do with gas? 2 completely different things.

  3. c says:

won’t mind the increase if I get what i pay for… use scales andbe fair, stop cheating!

  4. Sam Wright says:

What r u saying Gray that it’s better to get butane for local use from the oil than to sell the crude on the world market? You crazy? At lease BNE is supplying 30% of the market and if they had more production they could increase that to 60 – 80%. Folks in Boom area say that the BNE butane burn better than the import.

My problem is the faccyness of these companies to threathen us if they can’t get their own way.

Stand up Saldivar and mek den get d sense, the same way you did with Chimillo.
