Dem a talk ‘bout 9th Amendment; citizen disputes GOB figures

The government proudly announced after Wednesday night’s public consultations in Dangriga, that one hundred and thirty-six out of a total one hundred and seventy-eight residents in attendance support the ninth amendment. But today, one Stann Creek resident is challenging that statement. Emilio Zabaneh called News Five today to say that he was keeping score during that consultation and he alleges that the figures released by GOB are flat out wrong.  While he does not dispute that there may have been more yes than no, Zabaneh claims that there were definitely more than forty-two persons opposing the ninth.

“While standing in line I was writing down the people that supported the ninth and those that did not support the ninth and I got my turn to speak and then I held my corner and I watched as all chaos broke loose. When I was keeping score, when I left the building I had recorded that there were seventy-one people that supported the ninth amendment and seventy-five that had said no to the ninth amendment. That’s just on my unofficial paper. And then when I got home and was watching the news last night I saw an ad that said I think a hundred and seventy-eight people officially voiced their opinions and of those forty-two said no and a hundred and thirty-six said yes. I was like that is not true and I thought to myself I would have to call in just as a point of clarification because I don’t see how an official score of forty-two “no’s” can be recorded when we were already up to seventy-five. And I can clearly say that I do not support the bill for my own reasons but just looking at it, it’s unfair that they would report something that is not the truth. So I would like an explanation from the committee on how they came up with those numbers and I am publically asking for one because from what I had, it clearly is not like that.  It’s not that I don’t support nationalization but I think that they are not being clear with the people and for those reasons I don’t support it but I would like to see something that I could support and that’s why I voiced my opinion to ask let it be in the hands of the people and give the seventy-five percent referendum to the people and say this is our proposal and people, finally do you approve this or now?. That is an amendment that I would like to see added to this bill.”

The next round of consultations will take place in Punta Gorda.

Government’s mouthpiece are always untruthful, but resorting to lie in this particular consultation simply shows that the gov’t is desperate; desperate to pass the 9th amendment because they know their vile intentions, which is not for the benefit of Belizeans but to benefit the barrows and cohorts. Thus a gov’t that does something like this is very dangerous for a democratic nation because they can subvert anything to obtain their goal and suppress the freedom of speech, religion and freedom to belong to any political party. Barrow’s gov’t is heading to a system where they will press invented charges to innocent people.

The sheer gaul of government to pack a consultation politically and then announce a one-sided result is disgusting. These are supposed to be consultations, not voting contests.

And, I very much agree with Mr. Zabaneh. We need a constitutionally mandated referendum requirement that requires that ALL PROPOSED Constitutional amendments be submitted to the voters for passage before they become actual Constitutional amendments.

Having possession of our public utilities is what I support, but I don’t support the 9th amendment. We are missing the crucial points here; to every cause, there is an equal and opposite effect of that particular cause. So, what I am trying to set on the table is that there is a conspiracy in circulation based on the 9th Amendment that involves key political players in our battered socioeconomic and political environment; especially, the influence from external forces. These focal points have joined forces for the accomplishment of a global plot, and the external entities, in particular, have given the Barrow Administration a tremendous task to accomplish in the name of “the people of Belize.” The tails of this external forces has been present in our media, but I’ll leave you with just that. Its time to wake up!!! I’m 21 years old and I’ve seen enough, but have you?
