Belize City and Quintana Roo ties that bind

Zenaida Moya

The mayor says that the sister relationship will bring the cities closer. Thousands of Belizeans cross the border for medical attention and others go simply to shop. Mayor Zenaida Moya also spoke of different initiatives that will have an impact on both the health and economic sectors of the two municipalities.

Zenaida Moya, Belize City Mayor

“Yes, the whole cultural exchange very shortly we’ll start Chetumal Day here in Belize and then we will have the Belize Day over in Chetumal where we will be showcasing our culture. We will be getting our different artists to perform. It’s an opportune time also to showcase all the different artists that Belize has to offer. So we will be taking them there. The exposure will also assist them so that they can get more economic opportunities over there, people will see them, and they will be able to be booked as well. Invited also very shortly within the next two, three weeks we will be having tour guides, travel agents from Mexico coming here to Belize to see what Belize has to offer. Another key opportunity has to do with the Medical facilities. We are working with them to ensure that they can offer higher tertiary care there so that we don’t have to be going to Merida, we don’t have to be going to U.S and far off places. We’ll just be able to go right to Chetumal since we don’t have all those facilities in Belize City. We can stay either in Corozal or back and forth or stay in Chetumal. The point is that we are working with the Mayor of Othon P Blanco, Chetumal. He is very keen along with his entire council that we move forward with speed.”

This is shameful and ridiculous!!! Have Belizeans not done enough to BUILD Chetumal and Quintana Roo ?! Now we are formalizing arrangements to further deprive this country of any hope of emerging from the dark ages while the Mexicans smile all the way to the bank! There are healthcare facilities available in Belize which are grossly underutilized because people reflexly say “this is serious. I have to go to Mexico or States”. If the facilities aren’t used then they can’t be maintained. Mayor Moya should find out what IS available in Belize and encourage our people to utilize the services available here so that Belize city can look like Chetumal in the forseeable future. Shameful and embarassing statement from the mayor.
