Faber’s Road Youths give 124 haircuts and 33 braiding for FREE!

News coming out of Faber’s Road has often been touched by tragedy. But some residents of Faber’s Road are showing that good in the old capital doesn’t have to start with official intervention. The winds of change are literally blowing at the upper flat of the Dena residence on Faber’s Road extension. Brian Dena had a dream about doing something for the youths in his area and two years later, he and other young men and women are cutting hair, braiding and giving some school supplies to youths from children’s home and other neighborhoods for free. News Five spoke to Brian Dena about day two of the Bak To Skool Trimming Drive.

Brain Dena, Organizer, Bak to Skool Trimming Drive

“The first idea towards the trimming drive was one day at work when they had this homeless people on the show and I saw this homeless man, but he neva had no trim or nothing. So I was sitting there looking at him and I decided I would like to trim him. One day I came home and I was thinking about it home and I said why not just trim the kids them like how it was back to school. So I decided and I met with my friend and we sit down and discuss it and from there we got together, got some sponsorship and from there it took off.” So far we have ninety-nine for today which in I want to beat one thirty-eight so hopefully between this evening, I will reach the one thirty-eight. Currently we have the van out looking for some more kids.”

“And this kids you have gotten so far, what different area are they from?”

Brian Dena

“We’ve had kids from South side, we’ve had kids from Majestic Alley, we’ve had some from by Esso and currently we are supposed to get some from martins and also children’s home.”

“Do you think this can grow; it will be bigger, you will get more support next year?”

Brian Dena

“Most definitely because it is a good initiative; so it can get bigger. Definitely. I just wanna give some thanks to the people that made it possible like: Michael Theus, Dennis Hislop for the transportation, Tony’s Grocery, Chamber of Commerce, Western Union, Atlantic Insurance, my sister, Julie Dena, Dorothy Faber, Andrew Faber and most of all my colleagues the barbers and the hairstylists.”

Amongst the volunteers is Ada Toro, a cosmetologist from Pinks Alley better known as Majestic Alley. At the close of the two-day session, Dena says that they trimmed one hundred and twenty-four heads and braided the hairs of thirty-three girls. The group surpassed last year’s figure by over twenty-five. Dena dreams of taking the free haircut on the road next year.

This is a very good community effort. Instead of gangs killing each other for turd that do not belong to them, they should try to do something constructive in their neighborhood. The gangs should compete to see who can improve their neighborhood better than the other. Make it a constructive competition that help to make Belize a better place. The problem with this gang thing is that nobody wins. I don’t understand the gang mentality of such hate. What are they fighting for, what is the stake, what are people dying for. I don’t get it, I wish the light bulb could go off in the gang leaders head and they channel their energy for good.
