It’s bacchanal time again; Carnival mas Camps in swing

Earlier we told you about the statement issued by gangs, saying they do not intend to disrupt the celebrations. The largest mass event for the celebration is this Saturday when citizens will be lining up the streets to view the spectacular Carnival road march. The junior and senior bands are mostly ready for the grand occasion. On Wednesday night we caught up with two high energy bands at mas camps: Soca Warriors and Eternity Mas Band; it was a special treat. News Five’s Andrea Polanco got caught up in the fervour.

As the days wind down to Carnival Road March 2011, the bands raise the bar of energy and vibes at Mas Camp. Relatively newcomers, Soca Warriors and familiar faces of Eternity Mas Band gathered to show off some of their moves and a preview of the hype that they will take to the streets of the city:

Indira Mejia, Soca Warriors

Indira Mejia

“We’re a fairly small group. We are ninety revelers strong, but yuh know sponsorship was a bit slow this year, so it’s just ninety and we are a fairly new group.”

Andrea Polanco

“So what can Belize expect from Soca Warriors come Saturday?”

Indira Mejia

“A lot of love, hype and yuh know, just the carnival spirit.”

Misty Williams, Eternity Mass Band

“Eternity will have seventy five, strong, energetic revelers on Saturday. Our girls are ready, we’re hype and we just ready fi duh wi thing yuh know.”

Misty Williams

Andrea Polanco

“So come Carnival Day, Eternity dah one ah di bands weh everybody have to look out fah?”

Misty Williams

“Definitely, we wah be the last band but we wah be the best band! Energy, energy and more energy.”

Both bands will be promoting positive messages through their costumes on Saturday:

Indira Mejia

“We are promoting peace, love and unity. We are asking our Belizeans to please size the violence you know. So that’s our theme for this year.”

Andrea Polanco

“So in terms of outfits, everything ready and set for Saturday or work still di happen right now?”

Indira Mejia

“We’re still making some last minute preparations, and that’s basically it, not much just a little last minute touch here and there.”

Misty Williams

“Well this year Eternity is portraying Belizean Civilization, the journey to independence.  When you think about civilization you think the Mayans and you think about the Africans, they are both the contribution to what are and what we have today.”

Reporting for News Five, I am Andrea Polanco.

Three more bands are scheduled to strut their stuff; JamJam Mas Band and Mother Nature’s Creation tonight and Black Pearl on Friday.
