Top performers on CXC announced

Tonight students all across Belize are patting themselves on the back as the Ministry of Education and CXC National Committee today released the results of the 2007 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate exams. The biggest honours go to former St. John’s College student Jaime Burgos who received thirteen grade one passes and individual subject awards in religious education, biology, Caribbean history, and physics. Burgos has the distinction of being named Belize’s Most Outstanding Student and will be recognised regionally for the Most Outstanding Performance in the humanities. That accolade will be bestowed upon him at a ceremony in St. Lucia on December sixth. Second place and the title of Outstanding Candidate went to Christopher Waight, also of S.J.C., for his thirteen grade one passes. Other high achievers who will receive national awards are S.J.C.’s Alfonso Cal, Lucia Alpuche of St. Catherine Academy, and Brianna Penner of Belmopan Comprehensive, who will take home subject group awards in science, business, and technical/vocational. According to the Ministry of Education, a total of five hundred and forty-one certificates of excellence, two hundred and thirty-three certificates of achievement, four subject group awards, and thirty-three individual subject awards will be presented at the annual CXC National Award Ceremony scheduled for November twenty-second. Burgos, who is currently furthering his studies in Taiwan, will fly in to accept his prizes. At that same event, students who performed well in the 2006 and 2007 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations, CAPE, will also be recognised.
