Murder charges dropped, but formerly accused paralyzed while detained

crispin Moreno

A warden was killed and two inmates were left paralyzed after a prison bus overturned on the northern highway on May twenty-seventh. Twenty-four year old Dean Davis and twenty-nine year old Crispin Moreno, who are both remanded on Murder charges, applied for bail due to their medical conditions and the cases had very different outcomes in court today. Moreno, a resident Carmelita Village, Orange Walk, had his murder charges withdrawn before the bail application could be heard. According his attorney, Philip Palacio, no reason was given by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for the withdrawal. Moreno was accused in the death of Dr. Enrique Fernando Guerra, who succumbed to injuries after being robbed and beaten just days before the accident. Richard Berry, Alejandro Nunez, and two minors remain charged with the murder. Moreno is now paralyzed from the neck down.

Palacio also represented Davis and made the bail application on the grounds that the Central Prison’s Special Care Unit is not equipped to take care of him. Palacio further submitted that Davis is permanently paralyzed from the waist down and requires the use of a wheelchair and therapy. That, according to his attorney, puts him at risk in the event of threats of hurricanes, fires and other emergencies. His application, however, was adjourned until September second to be heard by Justice Troadio Gonzalez. Davis, a Dangriga resident, is charged with the murder of Erin Sutherland, which also occurred in Orange Walk Town last year.  He also believes that he will be acquitted of the charge against him.
