2 Belizeans receive UWI Scholarships

Jane Bennett

Two Belizean students also received prestigious awards today. Aretha Sabal and Devon Paulino were selected over students from across the Caribbean, who applied for the Sir Arthur Lewis Award for Indigenous People. They have each received scholarships to pursue bachelor’s degrees at the University of the West Indies in Cave Hill, Barbados. According to Jane Bennett, the head of the UWI open campus in Belize, the awards follow a visit by the principal of the Cave Hill campus. Sabal and Paulino say the opportunity opens new doors for them.

“Sir Hillary Beckles, who is the principal for the UWI Cave Hill, Barbados Campus visited Belize last year and met with the heads of the Garifuna council and the Mayan Council and made an offer to consider one student from each of these groups for the Sir Arthur Lewis Award, which is for indigenous peoples of the Caribbean region. And so the reality is today that two Belizean students, for the first time since this award started in 2005, have been awarded scholarships. We’re very proud of these two students; Miss Aretha Sabal from Dangriga and Mr. Devon Paulino from the Toledo District.”

“I did apply to the Cave Hill campus, I got accepted and then I found out about this award and I applied also and I found out that I got the scholarship.”

Andrea Polanco

“So when you got the news, what was the feeling like?”

Devon Paulino

“Well, I was perplexed at first but then I felt very good afterwards.”

Andrea Polanco

“So when do you leave for studies?”

Devon Paulino

“We leave the twenty-fifth of August.”

Aretha Sabal

“It means a lot because it gives me the opportunity to study abroad and witness new cultures in the Caribbean and just enjoy myself.”

Andrea Polanco

“So tell us about what field you’re planning to undertake this year.”

Aretha Sabal

“I’m planning to take accounting and finance in the social science faculty.”

Andrea Polanco

Do you plan to come back to Belize and work in that area.

Aretha Sabal

“Yes ma’am, I do plan to come back to Belize and work in my country and help my country.”

Jane Bennett

“Their scholarship covers everything, including the university’s tuition and related fees as well as rooming and boarding and that’s for a three year period. Of course, they have to be on good behavior and all Belizean students normally are and also their grades have to be at the acceptable level.”

While Sabal studies accounting and finance, Paulino will be pursuing a bachelors in economics and law; both at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados.
