Market vendors complain when asked to get Food Handlers license

The vendors at the Michael Finnegan Market are again bucking heads with the City Council; this time over food handler’s permits. According to the vendors, they received a letter informing them that they have until this Friday to obtain their permits. And while that notice is dated, July twenty-sixth, they claim it wasn’t delivered until this past Wednesday. The vendors say they need more time and they continue to complain about market conditions, which is said to be costing them business.

But I tell dehn fi mek dehn si di situation weh dehn got we eena because we have to put all kinda things fi keep di things dry. When ih rain, whole ah dis place yah; wata nearly to wi knee. So I feel like dis place noh got no sanitation. Di man weh come just now, ih seh if we noh have permit tomorrow, we have to get out ah di market. So I noh think dat right because di papa seh two weeks fi mek wi get di permit; di lady just bring di paper yesterday.”

    asking the vendors to get food permit does not make sense, they are not cooking anything to sell. It appears the the city council has nothing to do but to deprive these people of a living, being a vendor at the market is hard work, they have to be there from the crack of dawn to have their stalls ready for the public. The city council should focus on fixing the streets, drains, sweeping the streets, thers’s so much work for them to do instead of being bullies.

    @ Victoria I agree with you regarding the food handlers permit for uncooked food I don’t believe that this is necessary and that the city council is just trying to get more money from these vendors even if a food handlers permit was really necessary for selling vegetables I think that the city council has the carriage ahead of the horse what good is a permit going to do when the city council have these people selling their stuff in an unsanitary condition, it seems like all they want to do is to use the permit requirement against them by telling them that since they now have a permit and understands the necessity of being sanitary that they should not be selling their stuff when the area gets flooded, it should be the city council’s responsibility to make sure that this area is sanitary for the vendors which they allow to be there and collecting daily taxes from, if they are not allowing the vendors to be on the outside of the market then they should not be collecting taxes.     I think this is a great implementation of standards. Selling food or any product should be clean and standardized across the board. If Brodies, SAV-U and other stores have to keep their fruits, vegetables and food to certain standard it should apply to everyone who is has their own business. Appropriate time is needed for them to obtain this permit but we should also let them know that their area needs to be clean and appropriate for customers. Adequate space is available if they would be more organized.

    This is pur BS…requesting market vendors for a food handlers’ license is a big joke, what next? It seems that soon all the farmers of belize will be required to get one too…. The city council don’t have nothing to do , that is why they think lone BS.

    Are we crazy in Belize or what? Food handlers licenses are only for those who cook food to sell. This is not necessary to sell produce!

    CEO, these produce are food, I personally think it should go through the same regulations, people need to learn, getting a food handlers license, these people will have to take a course, it will teach them a lot and our people, these vendors will be just so more educated. We should support this, of course, the course should be given for free and these people should be charged a minimal fee on the first go around.

    I am sure the public is not against the idea but just like the tinted glass you can not give rules when no all ah we follow and then them no charge them weh no follow it. The same with this situation two things I see should have been considered the place is unsanitary and the date of delivery is illegal there should be a bigger time period for the vendors to take the course. If the authorities consider these issues then the public slowly will be able to afford to these changes otherwise forcing the people to do it immediately is like biting the hand that feeds you- taxpayers.
