Sedi says if people vehemently oppose, 9th could be removed

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

The Foreign Minister is also of the view that if Belizeans are against the legislation, taking to the streets is always an option. But he said that if the people vehemently oppose the ninth, then the government would withdraw it.

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

“Our protections really is the vigilance of the people because…”

Marleni Cuellar

“But the people are speaking out against it.”

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

“Even if you go to court, the court is not necessarily going to protect you. What has stopped the eighth amendment from going through? The people.”

Marleni Cuellar

“But only one portion.”

William Neal

“Have the other sections been struck down; the trial by jury…?”

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

“I don’t think they will be amending the constitution for that. That does not require a constitutional amendment.”

Marleni Cuellar

“That has been written into law now.”

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

“Yes, you don’t need constitutional amendment for that. But if sufficient people are opposed to it, then it will be withdrawn as well. You know what brought down Margaret Thatcher when she was Prime Minister in England? She introduced a poor tax that the people did not like and they struck and they brought down the Thatcher government, the iron lady. So what I’m saying is whatever piece of law exists at present, if the Belizean people are violently opposed to it, government will have to amend it, revoke it otherwise we are going to be kicked out of office.”

William Neal

“My final—I like that you ended it there because that’s a part of the thing that I think a lot of people get nervous about, the fact you say well you have five years to remove or to…”

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

“No, you can go to the streets at any time.”

Elrington says the government will proceed with public consultations, starting on August tenth.

  1. Diehard Belizean says:

I am sure that not only the majority of the Belizean people are opposed to this 9th Amendment, but I can bet you that the the area representatives deep in their hearts know that this amendment is DANGEROUS and are also against it. It could be dangerous to them when they are kicked out of office.

It seems that only PM Barrow is pushing the agenda and the other UDP ministers and representatives are towing the line even if this is against the will of their constituents. The UDP government is making Belize the laughing stock in the region and the world.

Everywhere people are fighting against dictatorship like in Egypt, Lybia and other countries. What is wrong with Barrow and his ministers?? They continue lying to the people of Belize by saying that they are doing this for the Belizean people. Please, none of us will benefit from the nationalization ; only Barrow, his family, cronies and a few others will really be the owners and enjoy all the perks and benefits from their actions.

Belizeans, it is Time to Rise and Shine… time to Wake up Belize.. time to say Good Morning Belize and do the right thing. Say NO to the Amendment and the other craziness of this UDP bunch!

  2. Lucas says:

Sedi do not wait for the people to get violent. You do not want to see the people get violent. Please help us by saving your own skin. My father used to say: UNA COSA ES LLAMAR AL DIABLO Y OTRA COSA ES VERLO VENIR Y MUCHO PEOR SI VIENE DESNUDO. translation: ONE THING IS TO INVOKE THE DEVIL AND ANOTHER THING IS TO SEE HIM COMING AND MUCH WORSE IF HE APPEARS NAKED. Therefore, Mr. Barrow; stop invoking the devil.

  3. Earl Grey says:

YES WE CAN remove the 9th AMENDMENT………..BUT THOSE “FALSE BORDERS” ARE REAL………

  4. Coralblack says:

People oppose! Hmm. The only time people got, dah fuh sit down an gossip, and kill each other. That’s the reason why politicians don’t have to worry too much about their (Color Title Policies),because most people can’t and really don’t want to think for themselves. Fascism in
    full swing. YHWH EL Olam

  8. DUTIED CITIZEN says:

Truths said; I OPPOSE, oppose what. After we got Independence any party with two thirds to three quarters of all the seats in the House had the authority or better yet the numbers to change any thing in the Constitution. Any such party could have remove or include any changes to any section. The current Constitution as is give authority to this mass majority elected Gov’t make any changes just as how the last mass majority PUP Government could have made changes. The issue is not this GOB or the PM it is the way our Constitution is written. We the people through our area rep might demand that Belize need a Constitution Court.

Let us stick to facts no politics here. No comment on the Utility companies, Ashcroft, PUP, UDP none of that. The issues are (1) as a people we are too divided and don’t know when something is of national interest versus party interest versus self interest and (2) we do not like to read and analyze. This Constitution is very outdated and is not in keeping with the times. The masses of our people need to stop gamble, hog up the rum, smoke up the weed and coke and get back in church to develop our families. WORD!

People lend me your ear! Both Sedi and his has always proved to be nationalists. Hubert is not in active politics, therefore he can be blatant in opposing the 9th amendment. Sedi, on the other hand is compelled to be subtle about it because Dean made an example out of Marcel Cardona. Nonetheless, Sedi has armed us with a wealth of information, as subtle as it may be. Sedi’s “Writing on the Wall” is saying that the government will go to the house after 90 days to pass this amendment. The only thing that will stop it is a national shut down of the country via protests. Peaceful or violent?…I think the latter…No amount of debate, no amount of consultation, no injunction, no referandum, not even opposing parliamentarians in the house can stop Dean Oliver Barrow on passing this legislation…Read Sedi’s lips people..”Our protection is the vigilance of the people”.

  11. Justice says:

I Oppse and so does the majority iof belizeans but will that stop the dictator? No way he is on an ego trip!

  12. Abe says:

I agree to: DUTIED CITIZEN…Very true

  13. Belizean says:

Dutied Citizen you made a good point but that wont change in 90 days so thats still not addressing the issue, why dont the government say, i ll take this time and educate everyone about it…infact we will enshrine it, not in the constitution, but at the people’s court, lets go out and educate every man woman and child, and show them how they will win…and lets win the last 6 seats being held by the opposition, and have an ultimate super majority caus the people now belive us…if this was so beneficial they would have done it this way. There is always something behind a curtain when government takes on this aggressive approach. Didnt Sedi get upset when they called his brother crazy on the Guardian..? and yes he has silently told the people what to do…now do you imagine so many people opposing it on every forum and this man is still going ahead on his ego trip, taking along his (brain dead fanatics) parliamentarians with him…yet one single text threating him to withdraw the preventative detention caused him to back off…I’m yet to be impressed..! and yes there will be protests…!

  14. Robert says:

I agree that protest can cause that the 9th amendment to be withdrawn. The problem is that the party that is in opposition is not a violent party like the governing party. The opposition’s style is not to ask for civil disobedience, which is existing up to date with this country. The opposition leader then, the PM now brought about that cicil disobedience upon this country. He called for it and now he has it and we all suffer. The government knows the type of opposition that they have. We need to join, non governmental, business, opposition and everybody else to cause this government to understand that the power lies with the people.

  15. linda says:

It is dangerous to give the PM so much power. Maybe they can brainwash those who do not think about the consequences it brings along to them and to their future children. Those ads on television make me laugh. To me its called ignorance since people are just looking at the BTL acquisition part and not on the terrible consequence of giving the government that kind of power.

  16. Cari says:

I agree, it is dangerous to give such power to the PM. Opposed to the 9th ammendment!

  17. John Smith says:

People are forgetting that the Proposed 9th Constitutional Amendment can be stopped NOW by the people insisting that PM Barrow sign the Commencement Order for the 13th senator. This was a UDP Manifesto Promise and this law has already been passed by the National Assembly and assented to the Governor General. The 13th senator gives the government a minority in the Senate and the Senate will be able to block BAD LAWS. We should rise up with the NGOs and insist that the PM signs the Commencement Order for the 13th Senator NOW. This will also strengthen our democracy as Parliament would be forced to conduct meaningful debates on the issues if they want their laws passed. PM SIGN THE COMMENCEMENT ORDER FOR THE 13TH SENATOR NOW!

  18. Peaceful Protestor says:

I oppose the 9th amendment to the constitution. We can’t and should not believe any explanation given by Barrow, the silver tongue. At last Sedi is coming into grips with reality. At last Sedi is understanding that it is the people of Pickstock, who put him in the House of Representative; not Barrow: ONLY THE PEOPLE CAN STOP BARROW.
Barrow is not listening to comments in any forum. So only protests and peaceful (or violent if there is a need) demonstrations will make Barrow listen. Barrow is trying to fool the people: he began with the 8th amendment, then 9th, and maybe he will go to the 10th. What is he trying? He wants by all means to satisfy his ego. Bzeans, let’s unite to stop Barrow! Our freedom and liberty is at stake.
