Parham Brothers acquitted of murder; amnesia afflicts witnesses

Kenrick Parham

In the Supreme Court, the last murder trial with jury concluded today since trials without juries are now in effect. The Parham cousins, who were accused of the murder of Orlando Montero aka “Vega,” are free men tonight.  Vega died after a July tenth altercation that occurred as he stepped off a bus destined for Mahogany Heights on the Western Highway.  His alleged murders ignited the fight with him, during which bottles were hurled at him and he was stabbed multiple times to the neck, throat face and body.  The acquittal of the Parham cousins, Kenrick and Derrick came this morning at about ten-fifteen a.m., after Sharmeilla Williams and Triennia Young were unable to prove that the Parham’s committed the crime. Two of the main witnesses failed to testify against the accused cousins and the third had to be treated as a hostile witness.

Derrick Parham

The first witnesses, Anthony Lino, told the court that he could not remember anything because he was because intoxicated that night and when shown his statement, he said that he didn’t recognize the signature.  Lino was given the opportunity to refresh his memory and after reading over his statement, he said that whilst on the bus, he saw two men sitting immediately in front of him.  They were Parham’s but in a twist, he said that they were not the two cousins in court.  The crown’s second witness, Herbert Jarey, brought documents to show the court that he has been on medication for a year and left the stand without being able to identify the two accused cousins. The third witness for the crown was Latifah Zuniga, whose testimony was shaken by the fact that she brought hearsay in her testimony.  Zuniga could not identify the Parham’s as the assailants.   At the close of the prosecution’s case, defense attorneys Leo Bradley who represented Kenrick and Dickie Bradley who represented Derrick made a submission that there was no evidence against their clients and that’s when Adolph Lucas directed the jury of ten women and two men to find the cousins not guilty of murder.

If not through the courts, where can Belize find justice and security? It MUST find them somewhere else.

Once again a murder case drops through. And it makes no difference if there was a jury or a judge. Witnessses are afraid to testify and “if you ain’t got no witnesses you ain’t got no case.”
Witnesses to a crime should me made to sign their statement immediately before a notary and that statement should be binding. Then nobody would have to intimidate or bribe witnesses.
A 7% conviction rate for murder is unacceptable. Give them a fair trial – then hang them.

Well here we go again no wonder sh-t keep going on.The criminals win another one. But don’t worry someone is going to take care of these two. In the end that is how it has been going. Give them about one week on the street and someone or something is going to happen. You don’t take a life and think that nothing is going to happen to you. Do these witnesses think that they are going to be safe, think again. Then they will be looking to the police for protection when the two come after them to make sure that this don’t come back and haunt them.

  4. Justice says:

hope they get the same fate as the person they killed!

  5. Elgin Martinez says:

This is why the death penalty need to be implimented and not this preventative detention that keeps them in jail until they’ve orchestrated a hit against the witness or witnesses. How many times havn’t we heard this bs about amnesia.Anthony Lino could not remember anything but could have remembered that he was intoxicated get the F out of here. This is also prove that the amendment to the constitution to try these criminals by a judge is not working. This law is already in effect as a result why havn’t there been any convictions.Murderers are still walking out of court free with the implimentation of this laws.So this law is useless.Witnesses are still been intimidated.Where is the change?

and life goes on with no change. jeez when will we Belizeans see a murder case well served if the law doesn’t protect the witness identity nor the life of the witness. Barrow instead of bring this crap of preventative bring the death penalty and stop beat around the bush we’re tired of the crap and you are the worst pm to help the fearful Belizeans from this murderers that roam with pride and you simply don’t give a damn about it. mein barrow you really sucks, be implementing laws good for nothing. with much concern it’s your same race the black community killing each damn it, for the sake of your black youths( not being racial just being factual) do something about it don’t be a jackass like you say.

    and……IF WE CAN’T KILL THEM……….

SEND THEM TO THE S.R.C……(Prison Farm) THE SUSTAINABLE REHABILITATION CENTER.

There THEY CAN EARN THEIR KEEP and CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY at NO COST TO TAX-PAYERS.

There THEY CAN GROW FOOD FOR SCHOOL LUNCHES, BUILD DESKS AND CHAIRS FOR SCHOOLS and GOV. OFFICES, ETC, ETC………

INSTEAD OF BEING A……… MENACE TO SOCIETY …. THEY CAN BE VERY PRODUCTIVE AT THE SRC – SUSTAINABLE REHABILITATION CENTER.

  9. islander says:

  10. Mikkel says:

And the witnesses that suddenly have “amnesia,” throw their @$$ in jail. Stupid, currupt, %#$&* judicial system.

  11. louisville,ky says:

We may halla and scream all we want about the death penalty. We may even accuse the PM of being callous and indifferent toward his own race but can’t you see that it’s the entire system that needs a total and complete overhaul? Do you truely believe that imposing the death penalty will take care of the country’s ills and make it a murder free society? If you do…… then ah gat swing bridge fu sell yuh.
Nobody will get hanged without overwhelming evidence of ones guilt. And with the way witnesses have been behaving, you may as well kiss the carriage of justice good-bye.Straight like that !
