Several persons shot over the weekend

Two minors were also injured in Belize City on Sunday morning. The young men were riding separate bicycles on Amara Avenue when a barrage of bullets was fired in their direction. Both victims received several gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Meanwhile, in the capital city, one man was shot by a friend in what is believed to have been a hunting accident. The men were hunting, but instead of shooting the deer, Jovanni Torres was hit several times on the right side of his body. Sergeant Fitzroy Yearwood also spoke to News Five about those incidents.

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

“Time and time we advise hunters when they go out there to stay together and stay in a group to avoid incidents and accidents of this nature. We received a report from Jovanni Torres; the police visited Western Regional where they saw him suffering from several pellet wounds to his body—apparent pellet wounds. They are saying that they were out hunting; it’s a group of them: Torres, Aaron Richards and Leroy Flowers. They are saying that they saw two game and separated to sort of box in these animals and Richard accidentally fired his weapon hitting Torres. We know that Richard is presently detained pending the outcome of the investigation.”

“And that investigation will determine what charges or has that been decided already?”

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood

“Like I said, at some point in this investigation we will be advised by the DPP as to what charges to levy against him, if any.  Sometime after ten yesterday morning police received the report of two minors being shot on West Canal. They were riding separate bicycles and when they reached somewhere in the vicinity of number eighty West Canal—the reason I’m giving you a  number, we can’t say whose residence—they heard several gunshots and realized that they were hit. These minors were transported to the KHMH where they were observed with several injuries, apparent bullet wounds. We have detained two persons that we believe may have vital information that could help us in bringing closure to this case.”

The persons of interest are twenty year old Tevin Abraham and twenty-five year old Andy Parham; both of Belize City. The fifth shooting victim of the weekend was Derrick Jones, who was shot on the left foot on Saturday night.
