The football road to World Cup 2014 now paved with set matches

In football news, the long road to the world cup has started with Belize’s two victories against Montserrat. The Belize team, however, has many more games ahead.   The Confederation of North, Central American & Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) held its draw on July thirtieth.  Twenty-four teams were divided into six groups of four.  In the regional draw, Belize was placed in Group Five
along with Grenada, Guatemala and St. Vincent & the Grenadines and is slated to play six games. On Friday, September second it’s Grenada vs. Belize.  On Tuesday, September sixth it will be Belize vs. Guatemala. On Friday, October seventh, it’s Belize vs. Grenada. On Tuesday, October eleventh it will be Guatemala vs. Belize. On Friday, November eleventh, it will be Belize vs. St. Vincent & the Grenadines. And in the last day of the CONCACAF First Group Round on Tuesday, November fifteenth, it will be St. Vincent & the Grenadines vs. Belize.  Of the twenty-four nations in the six groups, only the top three CONCACAF teams are guaranteed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, with the fourth-placed team playing another series against the fifth-place team from Asia for another space.  As the host nation, Brazil is the only nation that does not need to qualify.

Late this evening a press release was sent from the Ministry of Sports as a follow up to discussions held on July nineteenth in Belmopan between officials of FIFA/CONCACAF/UNCAF and the Minister of Sports. A second round of meetings is set for Tuesday at three p.m. with the President of UNCAF, Rafael Tinoco. The main topic of discussion will be the governments’ and the Football Federation of Belize’s strained relations.  As you are aware the National Sports Council has not registered the F.F.B., which is now on the road to World Cup 2014.
