Smart gives a new house to Teddy Rhaburn

On the night of June eighth, a line squall known locally as a freak storm, sent winds of over fifty miles per hour though the Belize District. Weather forecasters said those who experienced it, felt tropical storm force winds. That strength was displayed when it knocked down a SMART communications tower on Raccoon Street extension in Belize City.  The tower crashed into the roof of Teddy Rhaburn’s house. Although the house was already in a state of disrepair, Rhaburn said that he wanted a new one. As it turns out a little over a month later, SMART gave him just what he asked for.

“Well it was a plywood house.  Big tower across the roof.”

“And after that storm you said you were hoping that they give you a new house.”

Teddy Rhaburn

“Yeah. Well I have a new house only because it is a little bit smaller, but it is brand new. But I am happy. Thanks to smart. Thanks to smart.”

Jose Sanchez

“You need a smarty phone now?”

Teddy Rhaburn

“That’s the only thing left now.”

Ian Courtenay, Public Relations Officer, SMART

“Maybe a month or so ago, during a freak storm, a tower that we had in the area had a failure and it fell on the gentleman’s house and damaged his step, verandah and the roof somewhat. And as good cooperate citizens, we responded and immediately after taking care of his basic needs, looked into providing the gentleman with a new dwelling. About two or three weeks later, we were able to bring this house here unto the property, cast proper foundations for him and put him back in a house basically.”

“So he says all he wants now is a SMART phone—if he can ask for more.”

Ian Courtenay

“Well you see now I have to work on that. We want all our new Smart customers so we definitely will come back and give him a Smart phone so that he can be a happy Smart customer. Smart has always stood up to the plate stepped up to the plate when time to serve the Belizean public. This unfortunate accident could have been tragic, but thankfully it was not. And as good corporate citizens, we immediately came and did what we had to do or did what we were responsible for to restore the livelihood or even improve the livelihood of the gentleman affected by this accident. And we are all about providing for the Belizean public. So we look forward to serving you in other ways as well. We have installed the antennas on the building itself so that we won’t replace this tower here. We have just put the actual transmitting antennas on the building itself and that serves the purpose that the tower was here for anyways. So we felt that this was the easiest and safest way to do it.”

But what’s a house without a phone? According to Smart’s representative, the company will also provide a cellular to Rhaburn.

Happy for Mr. Rhaburn. Good going Smart. I think you did more than you had to, but that’s cool. It makes a big difference to Mr. Rhaburn’s quality of life and not damaging to your bottom-line. Your lawyers might have said just pay him for the value of his old house, but glad you didn’t take that advice.
