Ashcroft speaks about nationalization of Telemedia

Lord Michael Ashcroft

Lord Ashcroft also drew an analogy in respect of the nationalization of Telemedia. He compared it to the forced acquisition of a house, its value reduced and no compensation is paid to the previous owners. Here is how he put it.

Lord Michael Ashcroft

“Just imagine that you’ve got a nice house by the side of the road and the government says that we’re going to compulsorily acquire it and we’re gonna put a road through it. You have no choice in the matter and then you find that they’re not going to put a road through it and let’s say for example the ex-wife of the prime minister is now living in your home meanwhile. So you’re out on the street, the government is now arguing with you that you’re house isn’t worth very much, you’re in a unique position.  So you may have loved your house but you can’t do anything about it because the government has taken it, but the least you expect is to be paid for it and not have to fight to be paid for it and not have the government trying to nickel and dime you about every little crack in the house and there’s a little roof repair and every time you try to go to court you find that the case has been deferred to the next session because the government controls the court process too. And you must remember it’s the employees and the charitable trust and now two years since the first nationalization and there’s still no compensation. But let me make it even worse for you, Marleni, let’s say in that lovely house of yours it’s not the ex-wife of the prime minister that’s in there but their now renting it out as well. So they’re getting the rental income from it before you’re even compensated for your house.  In a state where the government controls the police and the armed forces, then they’re quite capable of doing things that are unconstitutional and not legal. I feel that the employees trust and the charitable trust will take the view that there was an illegal occupation by force of the B.T.L. premises. But there is nothing that—it’s just like your little house we talked about—if they put the B.D.F. and the police around it after you’ve got a court judgment for which your happy that you got your house back, and then you then find that state have put the police in it. Of course, you’re very disappointed because you know that that is not a legal move but you know you can’t match that force; you can only then go to the courts.  If the government is not prepared to compromise, then the previous owners have no alternative but to keep going forward with more and more and more litigation, which nobody—well certainly from the B.T.L. employees and the charity—they have never wanted to go down this particular path.”

Later on, Lord Ashcroft says he’s not the enemy. That’s coming up.
