Asian businesses close down in Benque after murder

Orange Walk businessman Zhou Ang Tan was gunned down inside his store, Tony’s, on Friday night during a robbery.  According to politician Lee Mark Chan several businesses closed in Orange Walk today while their owners attended the funeral in that district. Edmund Kwan, the President of the Chinese Association said that some businesses had closed their doors for the entire day in protest, although there wasn’t a call from the association for any type of demonstration or strike action from the community. But in Benque where about eighty five percent of the businesses are operated by Asians, the call for shutdown was wide and effective. One avid Channel Five viewer, Sam Bruce, has sent us pictures this afternoon that shows hardware stores, grocery stores and shops have all closed down in protest of the Orange Walk murder. An adult and a minor have been detained for questioning about Tan’s murder which occurred on the Palmar Road.

I guess the crime wave has spread to the affluent members of the Belizean communities and maybe this is what needs to happen for us to realize that no one is safe.

We need to stop blaming government for what we do. We have a lot of crime because parents are not teaching their children good values. They don’t even spend time with them. T.V . Is the baby sitter. So, crime is high because of the people. I see a lot of high school teens on the street 12-1 the morning dressed in minis, beer bottle in their hand, cigarette in their mouth, where are the parents?!

  8. Dawn Sandoval says:

Dear Marco: Sam Bruce is a volunteer community worker for the last 21 years in Benque, Captain in the community policing effort, special constable, and Chairman of the Benque Chamber of Commerce, elected for a second term, and yes he stays busy like ants!

Your anger and hate is huge Rod, I’m so sorry for you. You’ll perish with anger and hate. Relax yourself and be cool. Instead of crying wolf on everything, do something constructive and let people see that Rod is involved with raising funds for the less fortunate. Let the Big Newspapers have you on the headlines for the Community Services being done by you. Chill urself my brother and lets work positively to better Belize and stop instigating. Wake and live My Brother.
