Chinese grocer murdered in armed robbery of Tony’s Store in Orange Walk

Trapp was not the only person to lose his life over the weekend. A store owner was gunned down on Friday night. And while many would assume it happened in a known Belize City hotspot, it actually occurred in a relatively quiet village in the Orange Walk District. By all eyewitness accounts, after the robbers upgraded to murders, the shooters then turned their guns on the police. News Five’s Isani Cayetano also has that report.

Less than a week following the grisly murder of Orson Cardona in Orange Walk Town the Sugar City is once again mourning the loss of one of its own.  On Friday night forty-one year old businessman Zhou Ang Tan was gunned down while seated behind a counter inside Tony’s Store.  His place of business had been targeted by robbers on previous occasions.   The spray of pellets from a sawed-off shotgun during the third assault on his premises would later claim his life.  Inside the store at the time of the shooting was a regular customer.

“I went to buy some pepitos and he was a friendly Chiney and he start to speak to me [telling] that today was top-up and things like that and at the same moment I heard a noise.  Something clapped on the outside and when I looked I saw the man coming [in] covered up already and he went straight to the Chiney and shoot him, that’s all.”

Orange Walk police were immediately notified of the robbery and when the responded to the scene they also came under fire by a pair of gunmen believed to be of Hispanic descent.

Sr. Supt. Joseph Myvette, Officer Commanding Orange Walk Police Formation

“Police received report of a robbery in progress at Tony’s Store located on Palmar Road.  However, at that time the police were in the process of checking into another report so the police were on the scene and met the robbery in progress whereupon one of the robbers exited the building and fired upon the police and the police returned fire however he was able to make good his escape.”

During the incident, prior to the arrival of the responding officers, this patron, who witnessed the entire ordeal, was caught inside the store.

“I went to move from the counter but not so far and stayed right there.  Nothing.  I didn’t move.  I did no kind of movement.  When I saw the man [who fired the shot] he was [in front of the counter.]  The Chiney man [after being hit] he was in the chair and then he ran way to the back and the man went over there and put the gun to his, he still had the gun on the Chiney’s neck.  After that I was thinking, I was thinking what should I do because I had the other man beside me but I didn’t see him.  I had my eyes on the Chiney and afterwards I didn’t notice [so] I can’t tell you he [the robber] jumped or how he reached the other guy.  I just asked God what should I do and then suddenly I took courage and I ran outside.”

Sr. Supt. Joseph Myvette

“The police then shortly thereafter entered the building where Zhou Tan was observed with apparent gunshot injuries to his abdomen.  He was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital but died on arrival.  The police also recovered one sixteen gauge sawed-off shotgun from the scene.  At this point in time we have two persons detained for questioning who’s an adult and a minor.”

The eyewitness, who lives adjacent to an open farm area, is concerned that the poorly lit pasture was used by robbers to escape from the premises.  She believes it is also the entry point where they emerged from.  She was the only person inside the store at the time of the incident.

Voice of: Eyewitness

“The girl that works there she had moved because that’s the time that she packed her things in the freezer and that’s the moment she went into the bodega and she heard that and she didn’t come out from in there.  I was the only person that was in there buying.  It looks funny because during the weekends we have many vehicles out there and [people] drinking.  That night it was only me that drove there and I drove up and parked in front of the door because I said well I’m not going to take so long.  I will move immediately from there but that happened right at the moment I was there.”

While the Orange Walk Police formation continues its investigation into that murder, Belize City police are investigating an incident that has left a victim hospitalized but in stable condition.  Twenty-three year Frank Sinclair became the latest shooting victim on Saturday night. According to the police, its mobile unit responded to a scene on McKay Boulevard, where a gunman fired several shots at Sinclair. Sinclair, a disk jockey by profession, received gunshot wounds to both legs.

Well Belize is gone to the dogs. Thanks to the government, they need to create more jobs for the Belizean people. We also need to get more aggresive on the people commiting these crime, it is not safe for anyone. Pretty soon it is going to turn into the wild wild west where the people are going to start fighting back and there are going to be a whole lot more blood shed.

  7. Dedra says:

It’s palpable that this country is in a dilema. I cannot agree with anyone who blames goverment or anyone for that matter. Decisions are based on choices. Even individuals who are working make bad choices everyday. It might NOT be killing anyone, but wrong choices are often made with little thoughts to the those that will be affected by such choices.
