Chairman of the Board and former B.E.L. C.E.O. keyboard ‘beef’

Rodwell Williams

On the street, battles are fought with loaded guns, but inside the cold air-conditioned boardrooms, corporate battles are fought with the violent clash of fingers on keyboards. While a paper cut could be the only real damage done, the current Chairman of Belize Electricity Limited and the former Chief Executive Officer are locked in a typing skirmish that will have their computer monitors on high contrast at least for the weekend. We first start with the letter written by Rodwell Williams to the former C.E.O. Lynn Young about the termination of services of the B.E.L. executives which resulted in a payout of two point seven million dollars, most of which came from a pension fund that the employees contributed to over decades of service. Williams fired off by saying that “I did attend at B.E.L. on Thursday June Sixteen, expressly try and persuade you and the other executives not to quit the company, but on my arrival you told me that I heard you say on Love Radio that you already resigned…So then, you having resigned June seventeen, was not competent or authorized to terminate the other executives, but you purported to do so without lawful authority. Only the board was competent to terminate the executives, not you or the Chairman and neither the board nor the chairman sought to do so….furthermore, you purported termination of the executives by a single stroke decimated the entire top echelon of the company, leaving it decapitated in one day. Your conduct was…reckless, improper and unlawful.”

Lynn Young

Young also hit back with the best strokes of his keyboard.  He said that “I am sorry that my letter to the Guardian made you uncomfortable, but the contents were factual and the report carried by the Guardian based on information they purported to receive from yourself was not accurate, so I was compelled to correct the inaccuracies. Respectfully I could not have decapitated B.E.L.… my actions were solely to afford them the severance benefits that other executives had enjoyed in the past. My actions were not reckless or improper, or calculated to benefit myself and prejudice B.E.L.” Young says that he has been legally advised that his actions were not unlawful. This is surely not the end of the keyboard clacking and paper trail between the two, so stay tuned.

If it is the pension funds that was affected, then he should be made to suffer the consequences. A handful of people gained financially while the pension of others are touched. that was irresponsible but when people are in position they always feel that they can do anything. Just look at barrow!
