Children and teens get up and run

Earlier this year, the Belize City Council started a campaign to promote wellness. Mayor Zenaida Moya Flowers has been at the frontlines and partnering with UNICEF and others, the Council has now embarked on a summer camp program that incorporates numerous sporting disciplines. The aim is to foster sportsmanship for a healthy lifestyle.  Children and teenagers from age five to seventeen are taking part in the Get up and Run Program.  The Mayor explains to News Five’s Andrea Polanco that the participants get to choose what sport interests them the most.

“This six week ‘Get Up and Run’ Sports Camp’ is being held for children from the ages of five years old to seventeen years. It will comprise of a discipline, a sports discipline aspect but also a sportsmanship aspect where by we need to ensure that the young people have that sportsmanship quality to continue on into the sports.”

To target some six hundred children across the city, UNICEF pitched in with some much needed assistance:

“UNICEF has donated a lot of money towards the funding of the project or programme. We’ve also donated two recreational kits which can supply up to recreational facilities up to ninety children each so a hundred and eighty children all together. Well we have lotta footballs, none of them professional size so a lot of them will be geared towards the younger children. We have professional size basketballs many of those, we have professional size volleyballs, volleyball nets, we have handballs, and we have Frisbees.”

Mayor Moya says that these kits will help the children to engage in a number of sporting activities:

“First Aid will also be taught to the older children as well and they will get the opportunity to select which discipline they want to participate in. They can select two disciplines, basketball, football, swimming, volleyball, track and field; parkour is also a freestyle running and it’s one of the exciting running where every morning they’ll be able to even move another level of running.”

The sporting associations of Belize will be scouting the camp for new talents to develop. Reporting for News Five, I am Andrea Polanco.
