New Love Foundation’s celebs to help promote literacy in Belize

Michelle Wagner

New Love Foundation will be celebrating their first anniversary in Belize City over the weekend. Founder of the organization, Michelle Wagner, arrived in the country today flanked by some high profile international celebs, who will be pitching together to host a fundraising event to help promote literacy in Belize. News Five met with the stars and founder, who say Belizeans should support a worthy cause.

Michelle Wagner, Founder, New Love Foundation

“Putting the children into school and paying for tuition doesn’t mean anything if we don’t rehabilitate them within the school and to be able to do that, we have to bring not only a library within the school but to bring a reading program. It’s easy to pay for any child, but if that child is in the school and they are not able to read or write, then that is a major problem. We don’t only want to pay; we want to be able to help the children while they are there. I chose Saint Mary’s because the principal. I think she is a great woman and she cares about the school. I have ten primary schools that I am working with right now—our students are spread out through probably ten of the poorest primary schools in Belize City. I am also working with high schools. At this moment, I just added on two high school students. We will take those twelve high school students and carry them through fourth form.”

“It was about helping kids and I have my own foundation so it’s all about helping the kids and giving back and making sure that they have a future. Talking to them, help them read and mentoring and then we have a football clinic. So we’re gonna give them a one on one. I’m maybe gonna have to rough a kid up a bit too, you know, but it’s a good life lesson for them. They’ll understand what it means.”

Derrick Williams

Derrick Williams, NFL Player, Detroit Lions

“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity working with kids and the whole foundation that is getting started is one that I want to be a part of and help with. I have my own foundation that helps kids and provides lunches for kids in the Detroit public school area. So anything that I could do to give back, I just wanted to do it.”
