GST not GSU Unit pulls the cops on businesses that hard pay!!

Over eleven million dollars are outstanding to the Government through the collection of General Sales tax (GST) and a total of thirteen businesses who owe GST were targeted this week for committal.  One businesswoman came close to going to jail after she was placed on a prison bus late Tuesday evening and was saved from calling the Belize Central Prison home for a night.  That’s because a cheque in the amount of two thousand five hundred dollars was paid leaving yet a significant balance of thirty-eight thousand five hundred dollars which was owed for the period of 2009 and 2010 in GST. The businesswoman, Catherine Barothy, of Neon Plastics, was spared jail time when she signed an agreement to pay one thousand dollars a month, until the balance is paid.  Today, another well known businesswoman was being sought by GST.  Theresa Parkey, the owner of the Hugh Parkey Foundation and Diving Connection owes a much larger sum; as much as a reported one hundred and eight thousand dollars plus interest of seven thousand dollars.  Others that were visited this week by GST Legal Officer were Loretta and Vincent Palacio, who own Total Business Solutions and WorldCom. They have outstanding balances of one thousand seven hundred and twenty dollars and another sum of eighteen thousand and ninety four dollars. Loretta is out of the country but a committal warrant is out for her arrest and that warrant has been forwarded to the international airport for her arrest upon her return to Belize.  Another business called Service One Cleaner, owned by Samir Chebat, was also visited as it owes over one hundred thousand dollars. On Tuesday the business paid up fifty seven thousand dollars. Another business visited by the GST team, is Ivo Company, which owes a total of nine thousand four hundred and twenty one dollars. Although the company is no longer in operation, the money is outstanding and must be paid immediately.

  2. kwplacencia says:

About time. If the GOB would collect all the outstanding taxes (in every single tax category) they could probably pay off the Super Bond!

  3. CLEANHEART says:

VERY GOOD JOB, INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT, IF POOR PEOPLE CAN PAY THEIR TAXES THE RICH AND FAMOUS CAN DEFINATLEY PAY UP.
THE BIBLE SAY GIVE TO CESAR WHAT BELONGS TO CESAR AND GIVE TO GOD WHAT BELONGS TO GOD.

  4. FEMINIST says:

how come only women being hauled to jailed, no man owe taxes then.. Chancey, chancey, chancey..

  5. DT says:

This will blow over, the businesses that owe millions will get off, and the less wealthy will get hammered with higher taxes as a result. We can’t have ‘First Belizeans’ in jail now, can we?

  6. I Have Awaken says:

CLEANHEART, you really think these are the real white color criminals? The real white collar criminals are the ones sitting in Government seats, what we see here are scapegoats/patsies.

Also, this is just a show of power, one way people in this country especially businesses/chamber of commerce can shut down this country, like they are doing in Trinidad & Tobago and the Dominican Republic, would be to stop paying taxes and everything, however this is an example of what would happen if we try that.

Also many businesses don’t pay tax because they can’t, most are barely surviving. but, het defend your own slavery and freedoms taken away, we are moving smoothly into dictatorship and most are too blind to see or too apathetic to do anything about it.

Our independence was a myth and thus the reason our borders were called artificial, go to Gutaemala and they still have maps all over the place showing that Belize is part of their territory.

In this country today, the only thing you can do is make sure you are on the elite band wagon, for the rest will starve, suffer and perish and not one soul will give a crap.

  7. CLEANHEART says:

I have awaken== sorry but it was my personal view, i am sure countries over the world do get taxes, in fact Jesus spoke about it, these business can afford to pay, what happen if you understand is that they are in arrears therefore for that reason they have to pay so much. all business must make every effort to pay in time so it does not accumulate so high, that is when it becomes burdensome to them.

  8. I Have Awaken says:

No need to apologize CLEANHEART, we are all in the same boat of confusion and deception by the ruling elites. Cheer up comrades, things are getting worse!

  9. mustard says:

Excuse me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is already monies paid by customers and that money went into their accounts, now, why should they use that money for someting else.. It is stealing from the government, whether you like the current GOB or not, it is money that is NOT theirs to use for their own personal effects or use. In the USA, you never ever screw with the IRS, and that is how Belize should be, you collected the money, you owe the money, the country runs on this money also.. I am glad they finally did this. Woman no different than man, if she got paid the money, then pay the money.

white collar crime is more money than drugs. check the facts, wake up. Theft is theft, no matter how…………………
