Belize City, under sea level with poor drainage system

The vendors are not the only ones affected by the heavy showers. A number of streets in the Old Capital are tonight under water in the wake of the recent downpours. Jane Usher Boulevard and Castle Street are virtual basins of stagnant water and residents are complaining about deplorable road conditions.  But what is CitCo doing to address the problem?  News Five this afternoon caught up with Councilor Roger Espejo whose responsibility it is to look after the city’s thoroughfares.

Roger Espejo, Councilor Responsible for Streets

Roger Espejo

“The city council is out in full force doing what we normally do around this time of the year—removing debris from the canals and the drains and the waterways for water to dissipate in a faster quick fashion. What we are doing here today is an example of that. We are removing obviously garbage, excessive littering as your cameras would show and we want to appeal to the public that they can help the City Council and help us save their tax dollars by simply not throwing garbage wherever and whenever they feel like—which seems to be the case. The city council is out with our crew on the north side and the south side. Yesterday we had quite a bit of rain. In most parts of the city we are happy to report that the water dissipated relatively fast. There are some areas that need touching up—we concede and those are the areas that we need to work on for the rest of the week and whenever the water comes back again. You asked earlier as well abut Castle Street. Castle Street is as you put it a water catchment area every time heavy rains come down. We are dealing with that area. We have plans to improve the drainage in that area. We had budgeted for it last year but for some reason or the other we didn’t get to it, but we do want to get to it this time around. We know that those folks have been very patient with the council in terms of living under those circumstances whenever it rains and we really do need to deal with it and we will do so this year. The Belize City Council is apprehensive in terms of investing anymore in that particular area for the simple reason that every time holes and the craters and the street is repaired in that area, the water comes down and pretty much washes it away. So for that reason that area has been the way it is. But however, I’ll have you know and you I am pleased to let you know that that area is under plans to be renovated on a whole new level as a part of the Southside Poverty Alleviation program. That street will be dealt with by the Ministry of Works and for that reason, we’ve refrained from touching it and wasting anymore tax dollars for a temporary fix when a long term fix is right on the horizon.”

Proud of the council. PLUS they do have a company that does keep the city clean ALL YEAR ROUND. That’s BML. A contractor that is stuck at the hip w. the council due to PUP privatization. Yes. Even at the municipal level they privatized parts of the council. Keep up teh good work, Councillor E.
