Maurice Usher dies after tragic accident

Maurice Usher

Tragedy has landed again at the front door of Delia Lewis. Lewis is the mother of a cyclist Maurice Usher who was hit in a terrible traffic accident last Friday night that sent him in coma. Usher was driving a motorcycle, heading to Belize City from his family’s farm when he collided with a bicycle ridden by Efrain Martinez. He landed on the pavement between miles three and four on the Western Highway. Also riding with Usher was his cousin Nigel Williams. Usher struggled for his life since then but on Monday night, he lost the battle. Usher is the brother of eight year old Marquis Mahler who fell victim to street violence one year ago. News Five Isani Cayetano has this story.

Isani Cayetano, Reporting

Twenty-one year old Maurice Usher, eldest brother of Marquis Mahler, lost his battle for life a little after midnight following a now fatal motorcycle accident on Friday evening along the Western Highway.  Maurice, as described by his mother Delia, was a bona fide sports enthusiast.

“He loved cycling, loved cycling.  I could tell you, you know, some Sundays we does have race from in front of the yard to eight miles and back.  Certain times he came in, you know, third or second, you know, but never finished first.  That da di thing about him, you know, always wanting to finish first but it wasn’t his time yet to win, you know.”

He shared an excitement and passion for riding and was often seen zipping up and down Fabers Road Extension.  In this picture Maurice is sitting on what was described as his dream bike, an electric blue Yamaha R6.  Next to him is his childhood friend Edmond Staine.

“He also loved the motorcycle.  That was the thing that, you know, killed him.”

The death of Maurice Usher a year after the tragic loss of younger brother Marquis in a storm of bullets is a paradox that the family is struggling to come to terms with.  He was returning to Belize City from visiting the gravesite when tragedy struck.

Delia Lewis

“He went to the farm because he visited Marquis because Sunday made Marquis one year and he went to visit his little brother and when he was coming down that was when the accident happened noh.  So I heard it was a hit and run but I really can’t explain to you what really happened on the details that they gave to me that someone hit him and they hit a cyclist on bicycle.”

To reflect somewhat on the short life of Maurice Usher viewers would recall a feature News Five ran in the summer of last year where, along with family and friends, he was involved in a charitable program offering needy children free haircuts prior to the start of the academic year.  In that story we interviewed Edmond who shares a similar outlook in helping those in need.

I remember at my school, I had a lot of poor kids in my class. I went to Saint John Vianney and students had the same supplies from the year before, sometimes the same uniform. Whatever type of help we could get. Ih could be school books, wah uniform, wah little old tennis or anything, wah school bag or something. Just something these kids can use to go back to school. It will help to boost their morale at school. Kids always try to clown the ones that are less fortunate and this is the type of stuff that keeps back a lot of people from focusing and being the best they can be.”

While Maurice didn’t get to win the coveted title of Eight Mile Champion or become the best that he could have been his loss is immeasurable.

Delia Lewis

“It takes time and they say God will give me the strength noh, just by prayers and he will give me the strength to live because I have three more other sons that I have to, you know, be there for and be strong for them.”

Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

Reports that a vehicle was also involved have not been confirmed, but it is believed that Usher was hit by a vehicle that was coming from behind.

Another traffic accident also ended tragically for Virjilio Lazaro Pott, a truck assistant from Corozal. On Monday, Orlando Westby was driving a tractor collecting garbage in San Pedro when Pott, who was on behind the driver’s seat fell and was run over by the left wheel of the tractor. He suffered injuries to the head and died on the scene.

    rip maurice

  2. SW says:

If this was a vehicle from behind, it does not sound like an accidental hit and run, it sounds like murder.

  3. Storm says:

    A sad accident.

I assume he was not wearing a helmet at the time — a lesson for everyone else out there.

rip mauricio and also to the familiy may they have the courage to move on! About 20 years ago, you needed a light and a bell or else your bicycle could not be on the road, that was a good rule, i wonder how many lives that rule would save if we would still practice that rule. I am sure its still there but like so many rules, we all, and i mean we all chose to ignore it

  5. Rudebwoy says:

R.I.P Maurice, “only da good die young bro”

  6. Abe says:

I bet this is the governments fault too!! After all, everything is UDP’S fault. Even if your dog died, blame the government.

  7. but dah tru says:

Ministers and goverment officials get nice fat salaries even in haad times. they must be expected to enforce the laes for the proper running of the country. a few months ago Doug Singh had a press conference to announce the lauching of his Quality of life Program . where he would crack down on petty criminal offences , traffic, noise pollution, public drinking. All good if they would only follow through, taak is cheap. so you see government is RESPONSIBLE,

  8. Elgin Martinez says:

Traffic laws must also be enforced. We also need cops on the highway to ensure that motorists are not breaking the laws.

  9. incredible says:

But yet you dont want to pay taxes.

  10. brads says:

Maurice Usher, I shall meet you in Hades, no doubt, my friend. You went before me. I will tell you this, though: that day you went riding, you should have dressed for the crash. True wise Motorcyclists dress for the crash, not for the ride. Helmet up, dog; jacket up, dog; glove up, dog; pad up, dog. Riding out there on fast bikes naked like superman (like most of your friends) is just doing the roulette thing, Ese. You knew that, Maurice! What happened? Hope you have a lot of slaves and @#**hes in the afterlife.

  11. Roy Yates says:

I had the good fortune of living on an Island that had no cops, naturally no court.because there was no violence, total respect for each other. Why does someone elce to dictate decency. Look at the Japanese how they behave after the terrible earthquake. No looting of property, no need for police to keep order, instead they were used to search for missing persons. THAT’S CIVILITY FOLKS.
