Belize Film Festival’s free filmmaking workshop

Yao Ramesar

If you have a creative mind and have a passion for writing and imagining the stories come to life, then there is a workshop that is suited just for you. As a part of the Belize Film Festival, the organizers have invited a Trinidadian Filmmaker to Belize. The two day workshop will take you through the process from the genesis of an idea, to the writing, then onto production and distribution of the final product.  According to Yao Ramesar the workshop is absolutely free to anyone who is interested.

Yao Ramesar, Filmmaker

“I’m in Belize to run a workshop for the Belize International Film Festival, “from script to screen,” where I am going to take you from concept to the actual screen, production, initial distribution and so on. And that’s gonna be on Wednesday and Thursday from nine to four at government house. You have to go into the Bliss and register online at belizefilmfestival.com. But it’s gonna be so come on down.”

Jose Sanchez

“I know in Belize you have a lot of people who are interested in writing but don’t know how to translate those ideas from script to the screen. What can they expect from you?”

Yao Ramesar

“Exactly that. I’m gonna show you how to concept, your story idea, and flesh it out in the screen play that is adequate for you to go shoot it, find your shots, concepts like sound, soundtrack, dialogue, direction and so on—basically putting it together. I mean you can have an idea in your head but it’s a transition to take that idea now to put it into something that’s viable for the screen. So we’ll just demystify that and show people how to achieve that. And of course having made the film, I’m going to give an insight into how to get it distributed and sold because all dressed up and no place to go. You got to take it somewhere otherwise you’re just making a film to let it sit there. So I’m hoping to spark a fire, a revolution, in cinema in the Caribbean and Belize. I’ve been film for about twenty-seven years. I’ve made about a hundred and twenty films. Last section of films I’ve been doing is a trilogy called Sister God and it premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and I’ve completed the sequel. I’m doing a feature on Haiti called Haiti Bride Now. I’m also doing a Chinese co-production called Change in Paradise in Barbados. So, all these are fictional and narrative features that I am doing. And I am developing some more stuff now. If I’m not doing anything, I won’t tell you I’m doing it. So I am speaking from my experiences. I’ve been had some good honors; I was Caribbean first laureate in arts and letters in 2006 when they started. So I do my thing.”

You can register for the free workshop online at Belizefilmfestival.com or by calling the Bliss.
