Fish Alert: mercury levels increase in certain species

There’s other news from the west, if you fish in the Macal River and particularly, if you consume Bay-snook, you are advised that a recent testing confirmed increased levels of mercury in fish from the Macal River. The Ministry of Health along with the Department of Environment and BECOL conducted the testing in April of this year. The results show the levels of mercury have tripled and are expected to increase. Health authorities warn that exposure to mercury can lead to mental retardation and underdevelopment in children, vision impairment, nervousness and weakening of muscles in the hands and feet. The Ministry of Health recommends eating fish from other locations of the country or substituting local chicken or other replacement foods.

What is the source of the mercury? Is it just due to the reservoir impoundment or is there by chance an industry getting rid of waste by dumping it in the river?

This is only confirming what Candy Gonzales and others in the struggle to get BECOL to tell the truth have been fighting to make known for years. What’s more, the article failed to point out that the water is so contaminated that people in the San Ignacio-Santa Elena area frequently report rashes and eye irritation after bathing in the Macal river, especially in the dry season.
The untold ecological, recreational and especially health related costs from the degradation of our river here in Cayo can and will NEVER be fully offset by any supposed benefits accrued from the dams. Chalillo is still a lie!!

  5. Earl Grey says:
