Kids snap their way through Audubon’s photography camp

The Audubon Society is hosting a number of summer camps for children of different ages. We caught up with a group of young and eager talent immersed in a two day camp on digital photography.  The kids learned basic skills on how to use the camera to snap better and more interesting photos. As that program concluded another is starting which will take other kids to a national park. News Five’s Jose Sanchez reports.

The Belize Audubon Society’s Photography camp began in the boardroom where the kids learned technique including macro photography using stuffed animals.

Dirk Francisco, Publicity Director, BAS

Dirk Francisco

“For the past two days, I’ve been teaching these wonderful kids digital photography, the fundamentals of photography, some ethics of photography. We’ve learnt basic composition and framing. One of the things that people don’t like to do in photography is keeping a horizon level. So these guys have learnt some of these activities and I taught them how to edit or resize a photo before they email it to someone. Everybody here likes facebook so from now go back, all of these kids will have great facebook photos to share with families and friends.

The summer camp participants also took their cameras outdoors where their trained hands and eyes snapped to their hearts content.

“Right here I’ve been learning how to take better photos that I used to and the different modes of my camera. And it was really fun because I got to learn different things about my camera and meet new friends.”

Jose Sanchez

“And what is it in particular that you think you are going to use as this course ends?”

Jasmine Betancourt

“Well I’m gonna go home and then I am going to start taking more photos and improve in what I’ve learnt and I’m gonna get a better camera so I can do even better pictures.”

John Usher

John Usher, Photographer, Audubon Summer Camp

“You can always use your camera for everything and you can learn to make better pictures.”

Jose Sanchez

“Any picture in particular that you like that you took already?”

John Usher

“Yeah I have one of the sea and the sidewalk and the whole thing just sweeping through.”

Jose Sanchez

“And you get to meet new people?”

John Usher

“ Yeah.”

Jose Sanchez

Gilda Bennett

“And what have you been learning?”

Gilda Bennett, Photographer, Audubon Summer Camp

“About the pieces of camera, how do you control the camera and stuff like that.”

Jose Sanchez

“And what you like about what you have been learning?”

Gilda Bennett

“Taking pictures of people and the big lighthouse and the stuff.”

Jose Sanchez

“And picture in particular you like taking?

Gilda Bennett

Emirah Robateau

“Yes sir, the Baron Bliss Grave.”

Emirah Robateau, Photographer, Audubon Summer Camp

“I’ve learned how to take better pictures by not putting everything in the centre and watching the horizon.”

Jose Sanchez

“Any particular scenery you like?”

Emirah Robateau

“I like the beach scenery—like how the water looks.”

Dirk Francisco

“Thanks to Atlantic Bank, thanks to the staff of Belize Audubon Society and thanks to the parents of these wonderful kids who have sent their children on an Audubon Summer Camp. Our camp activities continue. This weekend we are going to St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park to have some fun. We have spaces for people who are willing to come. Next week we have cross camp and many other fun summer camp at Belize Audubon Society.”
