P.U.P. calls for government to respect Rule of law

John Briceño

The People’s United Party did not attend the Special House sitting when the Government acquired Belize Electricity Limited on June twentieth and its parliamentarians walked out of the House this Monday when the Barrow Administration re-acquired Telemedia.  Their viewpoint on the government acquisitions was found in press releases but the party’s position on whether or not it supports nationalization had not been otherwise publicly stated. Today, its leader, John Briceño, stepped up to the podium and answered that question and much more. After delivering a blistering statement saying that the nation is in crisis, Briceño took questions from the press. On the hot issue of nationalization, he pointed out the P.U.P. has no fear, but he likened the re-acquisition of Telemedia as crony capitalism and on the question of rule of law, Briceño was most critical of the government.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“When the real national interests demanded it, we took back BWSL by negotiations. We are not afraid of acting in the interests of the Belizean people when the national interest truly demands it. Barrow cannot get away from the fact that he, senior counsel, master of the games, has the dubious distinction of being the only Prime Minister who has been found to act unconstitutional by Court of Appeal. His so-called nationalization was declared null and void, laid bare, in tatters, shredded as fake, false and illegal by Court of Appeal. That is his record. It is regrettable that in his three years as Prime Minister, Dean Barrow has come to the Belizean people with three pieces of legislation to take over companies—two for B.T.L. and one for B.E.L. As of late, the Prime Minister seems to be wrapping himself in the Belizean flag and trying to give the impression that he is more Belizean than the rest of us. But I want to remind you that while he is demonizing Ashcroft, the law firm of Barrow and Williams, his law firm, continues to work for the Ashcroft Interests, continues to collect money from what he calls Ashcroft interest. And since he likes to call out people, I am calling on the Prime Minister to disclose to the Belizean people exactly how much money his law firm has made and continues to make from the so call Ashcroft interest. Instead of fighting with these investors, I urge the Prime Minister to come to the negotiation table to work out a solution that will benefit the Belizean people and not further harm our reputation internationally when it comes to investments. With the respect to B.T.L. this matter ladies and gentlemen is clearly not a case of nationalization. What happened in the national assembly was a clear case of a Prime Minister using his parliamentary majority to disregard the rule of law. There was no ambiguity in the one hundred and fifty page judgment of the courts—that the action of the government was unconstitutional and null and void. What the Prime Minister did in the house on Monday was not nationalization, it was plain and simple crony capitalism. If the Prime Minister was acting in national interest, there would have been no need for him to take over the twenty-three percent of the shares owned by employees. On the contrary, he would have done everything to protect their interests and protect their shares and dividends. So when the Prime Minister talks about acting in the best interest of Belizeans and then talk about wanting to bring in some Argentinean company or DigiCel, he is not acting in the interest of the workers of Telemedia or in the interest of Belizeans. The real question is; after having Belize Telemedia for two years, who has benefitted? There has been no rate decrease for Belizeans, no better service for the poor, no more internet in schools. B.T.L. workers were abandoned by barrow and two eyras later he is still treating them like step children.”

Barrow knows he is a dictator; I know it; the PUPs know it; the UDPs know it; all Belizeans know it. So what are we going todo about it? Barrow right now is an illegal PM and all his actions since he usurped political power, are invalid. If Belizeans don’t remove him, then we will have no choice to have the head of state <the Queen of England, send in the Royal Marines to remove him or resume governance directly from Britain,or engage in a civil war to settle all scores. Are you ready, Belizeans, for the choices? Are you ready ? I predict blood will flow…..

The time for talking is over. It is clear that Mr. Barrow, has no regard for the public interest. His leadership skills reflect nothing but a crony capitalism mentality. I applaud your efforts, Mr. Briceno, and commit myself to stand beside you and fight the good fight. This man has taken this country for a joy ride in which only his puppets have benefited. Stand up Belizeans!!!!! 3 years of suffering under this administration is just too much. Can you imagine what the udp will do if they get another term in office. If you truly have a nationalistic heart, AS U SO MUCH CLAIM then do the right thing Mr. Barrow, and call elections now…the people are tired of suffering…it is time to lead or to LEAVE!!!!!
