Belize wins football match against Montserrat

We begin tonight’s newscast with positive news. That’s because Belize is celebrating a pair of victories in the international sporting arena both in football and basketball. In Trinidad, game one of a home and away series played between Belize’s National ‘A’ Team Selection and Montserrat for a shot at qualifying for World Cup 2014, concluded a few minutes ago at the Ato Boldon Stadium.  Led by forward Deon McCauley with a total of three goals Belize’s team emerged victorious by a score of five goals to two.  Additional goals were scored by midfielders Harrison Roches and Elroy Kuylen to clench the blowout win.  Game two is scheduled for Belize on Sunday at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.  If successful in winning the home game, the team will advance to another round of competition. It’s a bittersweet victory because has distanced itself from the team that has been decertified by the National Sports Council.

And in Mexico City this afternoon, Belize’s National Under Sixteen Selection narrowly defeated Costa Rica in game one of the FIBA Americas Tournament by a one point margin which ended in a 71-70 victory.  Brian White led the offensive with twenty-three points overall followed by Tariq Middleton and Daniel Sanchez with eleven and ten points each.  While Team Belize was only thirty-nine percent in shooting it dominated the boards with Brian White grabbing ten rebounds. All being said, Belizean athletes had a good day internationally.

    Population: 5,879 (2008 estimate)
Note: an estimated 8,000 refugees left the island (primarily to the UK) following the resumption of volcanic activity in July 1995; few have returned. Pre-eruption population was 13,000 in 1994.

Montserrat has its own FIFA Affiliated Football Team, and has twice competed in the World Cup qualifiers. A field for the team was built near the airport by FIFA. The Montserrat team are currently tied for 199th place in the FIFA world rankings with eight other teams, including American Samoa and Guam. In 2002, the team competed in a friendly with the second-lowest-ranked team in FIFA at that time, Bhutan, in The Other Final- the same day as the final of the 2002 World Cup. Bhutan won 4-0.

Belize has been participating in world cup qualifiers since 1990′s and could only monster a 5-2 win over a country with less than 10,000 people. What is there to be happy and proud of? This FFB 11 should have put a whipping on this poco tiempo Montserrat team.

Did I hear John Saldivar say, “government has nothing to do with FIFA”, you got that right mister minister, these are the best years of Belizean soccer. The most players outside the country, I’ve never heard of Belize ever winning games outside of Belize, Belizean players getting paid $3,500.00 unheard of. Big-up Dr, Bertie Chimillio.
One down many more to go,

  5. Zen says:

    Congratulations Team Belize

  6. m says:

I have said it before and will continue to say it. The National Team should not be caught up in any problems that the Government have with FFB. I am happy that the team went and win. Now the Government should take a second look at what is happening. Yes Mr. Chimillio might not be correct but deal with it some other way not punish the team. Go guys we will always be behind you no matter who is leading the team.
