COLA protest loses fizz before it takes foot

A protest organized this morning in the Old Capital did not have the numbers that two others had in the past two weeks; only a small group turned out to protest a raft of social ills.  The message, however, stayed on course and COLA says it all leads to a big demonstration in the weeks ahead.  News Five’s Jose Sanchez reports.

The Constitution Park in Belize City was the staging ground for a second protest by Belizeans for Justice and COLA.  COLA President, Moses Sulph says the issues need to keep in the forefront.

Moses Sulph, President, COLA

Moses Sulph

“It’s not a total repeat; it’s kinda a continuation. It might look like another repeat but it is clear that we still haven’t achieved anything. There are many people who are out of job, unemployment; we have really high gas prices. We had written letter to the Prime Minister asking him to subsidize the gas price as was a promise made by his administration that gas would never go above seven dollars. Taking into consideration all the externalities, but we are saying that can be offset by the money they are now making from the windfall since the windfall is now kicking in after ninety dollars. And then there is still the issue of the vendors’ situation on mahogany. There is still the issue of land situation. There is still the issue of forty-four percent poverty.”

Last week’s Protest For All Causes brought out over a hundred, but this morning there were only a few. The organizers were not deterred.

Jose Sanchez

“Are you disappointed in the poor turnout today?”

Joan Sutherland

Joan Sutherland, Member, Belizeans for Justice

“No, no, not really. We all know that it is during the week and everybody has to work. But next month we are planning a big demonstration. I think it is second of July and it’s gonna be on a weekend so.”

Jose Sanchez

“But why? We just had a demonstration last week, why have one again this week?”

Joan Sutherland

“Well we just want to show the government that we gonna keep the fire burning until everybody gets what they want.”

Moses Sulph

“Some people at this time believe that they are so hopeless. They kinda believe that we have a government that is just going to dictate and going to use brute force against the people. If we have ten thousand people or five thousand that partake in that grand march, I am sure we can send a message and I believe that the people will be heard.”

Jose Sanchez

“I know for the government to listen they want to see numbers but for today we’re not seeing much people come out. Is that disappointing cause the government won’t pay much attention?”

Moses Sulph

“It’s not really disappointed. As I mentioned before, we have to look at the factors. The factors are that we are having it at a ten o’clock on a Wednesday morning. We understand that factoring that into the formula that we would not have the show that we would have wanted to. But as I have said before, we’re leading up to that big march. I am saying that we have to move to direct action. Even if we get fifteen thousand signatures on an issue, the government still won’t listen. So it is basically those fifteen thousand people would have also been dissatisfied because the government still don’t listen. But if you had a way by pressuring in the street like the people did in other countries, then I believe that then is when the government will listen.”

Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

Sulph explained that the bus owners, an integral part of today’s demonstration, needed to hold an emergency meeting. And that is why the protest could not take foot. However, he hopes that the national march will bring out the masses on Saturday, July second.

“No, no, not really. We all know that it is during the week and everybody has to work….” Can someone say contradiction? How comes you are marching against rampant unemployment and the protestors cannot show up because they are at work? Please explain that one to me.

  2. Belizean says:

Kids take note: This is is what the story book talked about when they talked about the Boy who cried wolf.

  3. javier solis says:

Yeah right. So much unemployment but the people could not come out because they were at work!! Sulph should try to get a job himself. But its easier to be on retainer from Oceana than do physical work. The lips are less strenuous to move than the hands, true Moses?? Where was the aspiring politician Yolanda? On the campaign trail or selling some of her “healthy” products?

  4. Belizeangyal says:

That’s the reason why we are where we are. The only thing we can do is complain and complain. but when the time comes to take action, we always have something to do. Truth is, government will never listen unless we make them listen. Or are we afraid of them victimizing us if they see us protesting???? hmmm, hafu wanda sometimes!!

  5. Do it right says:

All personal agendas here. The protests fizzled because the issues they are trying to protest against are not significant ones. These people are ignorant to the fact that the people don’t see their issues as a significant one. They try to throw in the unemployment rate and poverty to try garner support and cover the insignificant issues that they are really protesting about. Joan says “No, no, not really. We all know that it is during the week and everybody has to work.” Can’t believe she seriously said that. She doesnt even know the reason they said the protest was suppose to represent. Real senseless stuff on the part of these two supposedly “non politically affiliated” groups. Poverty, Unemployment is visible in every country all over the world even the rich first world countries Mr. Sulph. A protest won’t solve anything, but agitate people and hinder progress. Its not the governments of the world that is causing unemployment or poverty my friend, so protesting against the GOB is senseless. All the houses, housing grants, feeding programs, scholarships, education grants, training programs, upliftment programs, and the program where the poor can get groceries for a fraction of its price are all, etc are all initiatives of the GOB to help the poverty stricken people of the country.

  6. Elgin Martinez says:

Some of these people are afraid to be vitimize by politicians.Hence the low turnout.Look at for eg with the present crime situation in Belize.People are been murdered everyday and yet the Belizean people refuse to come in solidarity to condemn these issues. We’ve got a long way to go my people.

  7. LARGE AND SEXY says:

AS LONG AS COLA AND BFJ ARE AFFILIATED WITH ANY PUDP WE THE BELIZEANS WILL NOT SUPPORT THEM, MOSES AND SHAKRON ARE SHOWING THERE TRUE COLORS NOW, AND IF THEY THINK BELIZEANS FORGET WHAT MUSA AND FONSECA DID TO USE THEY ARE SADLY MISTAKEN.
NEXT THING IF THE UNEMPLOYMENT IS SO HIGH WHERE ARE THE UNEMPLOYED??
MOSES CONTRADICT HIMSELF, BECAUSE HE SAY ITS A WORKING DAY, HENCE THE REASON FOR A LOW TURN OUT, YET HE SAY ONE OF THE ISSUES FOR THE DEMOSTRATION IS UNEMPLOYMENT, MEIN HE IS SURELY CONFUSED.

I AGREE THAT MOSES SHOULD FIND HIMSELF A WORK AND STOP HIS MISCHIEVOUSNESS AND YOLANDA SHOULD FIND A MAN AND GET BUSY.

  8. Storm says:

I absolutely agree with the sentiments of both Mr. Solis and “LARGE AND SEXY”.

  9. InsultedSSBemployee says:

If it was the PUP doing all these injustices you would see enough Belizeans protesting, but Belizeans are AFRAID of the UDP and they know they will be victimized if they take part in protests. Moses was used by the UDP in 2005. He helped to create this monster of an administration; now that the monster is taking a big bite at him and Belize, he can’t control it………. All those union bodies were used by the UDP, now that they are suffering, thery are afraid to say anything……… afraid of being victimized……!

  10. Belizean2dbone says:

    Blah Blah Blah @ Insulted1.

  11. Elgin Martinez says:

Large AND Sexy:That’s a weak argument. We all know that the unemploment rate in the Jewel is very high. futhermore Moses conradicting himself don’t change the fact that unemployment is widespread in the Jewel.

  12. wisdom says:

Victimized how if they have nothing to loose? No jobs, no house, no land, no fodd. What can GOB take from them? Admit its all nonsence and jibber jabber.

  13. innocent says:

large and sexy , you must have a personal issue against ms schakron. You sound quite dumb and ignorant. All you talk about is man. dumb, dumb .

  14. Elgin Martinez says:

Wisdom : You’re so brain washed are you one of Barrow’s cronies?

  15. LARGE AND SEXY says:

INNOCENT FOR YOUR INFORMATION YOLANDA IS JUST A CRAZY WOMAN, ASK HER HUSBAND
ALL SHE WANTS IS ATTENTION, YOLANDA IS THE DUMB AND IGNORANT FOOL, DI PAPPYSHOW HERSELF, SHE SURELY NEED AND MAN AN NEED TO GO TAKE CARE OF HER TWO CHILDREN

  16. Moses Sulph says:

A BLESSED DAY TO EVERY ONE. THOSE WHO SEEK TO ALIGN ME WITH BEING POLITICAL ARE JUST SIMPLY IGNORANT, I REMAIN CONSISTENT, EVEN WHEN PUP WAS IN GOVERNMENT I REMAIN ON COURSE WITH THE ISSUES. FOR THOSE WHO CRITIZE BECAUSE THEY ARE UDP AND CANNOT SEE BEYOND THE COLORS, VERY SAD, THINK ABOUT ALL THOSE SUFFERING. I would not want to give any attention to those who are blinded to the facts 23% unemployment thats over 60, 000, poverty over 44%, kids high school age 60% out of school, ok those are facts. MOST BELIZEANS ARE AFRAID OF THE DICTATORSHIP GOVERNMENT WE HAVE ARE AFRAID OF BEING VICTIMIZED. WE WILL NOT STOP UNTILL OUR PEOPLE HAVE BETTER OPPERTUNITIES.. WE SHALL OVER COME.. BE YOUR BROTHER KEEPER ITS THE GOSPEL…….

  17. LARGE AND SEXY says:
