P.U.P. supports Supreme Court of Judicature Amendment Bill

Francis Fonseca

While the P.U.P. has rejected four of the five proposed amendments, including the controversial preventative detention, it does endorse the Supreme Court of Judicature Amendment Bill.

Francis Fonseca, Deputy Party Leader, P.U.P.

“The one that we support has to do with the amendment to the Supreme Court of Judicature Amendment Bill which is the bill which provides that no longer shall decisions of magistrates operate as an automatic stay of execution.  We also said, with relation to some of the other proposed amendments, that we are prepared to look at the law, the substantive law for example the Indictable Procedure Act [and] the Juries Act.  We’re prepared to look at the law and at the Penal Reform Act to look at the substantive laws to see how those laws can be enforced and strengthened to achieve some of the objectives.  But we are not in support of any of the constitutional amendments.  We do not believe that there is a need for any constitutional amendments to put these Draconian, backward provisions and amendments in the Constitution of Belize.”

The P.U.P. intends to take part in the hearings and public consultations of the Constitution and Foreign Affairs House Committee of the House of Representatives and involve its members in discussions on the proposed bills before debating it at the parliamentary level.
