Hummingbird Highway accident claims life of 10 year old boy

Byron Gonzalez

A ten-year old school boy of the Hummingbird Community was hit and killed by a Hilux pick-up truck at mile twenty-six on the Hummingbird Highway on Monday afternoon. The female driver of the vehicle, Martha Flamenco, is from the neighboring village. She was detained and released and charges, if any, will be determined by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. News Five’s Andrea Polanco today found Byron Gonzalez’s classmates in grief.

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

Today only a spot of dry blood on the street marks where ten year old Byron Gonzalez lost his life right across from his home. Gonzalez, a standard two student of Middlesex R.C School, alighted from his school bus and was crossing the street behind the bus when he was knocked down by a truck traveling in the opposite direction. Gonzalez who suffered a cut wound to left side of the head died on the spot in front of his mother.

And for his school it was a shock says his teacher, Sonia Marin, who had spoken to him shortly before he left for home:

Today a single candle burned on his desk and his empty chair sat in a corner, as a reminder as his classmates tried to cope with exams:

Sonia Marin

“The class don’t want to do nothing they’re like ‘miss I nuh feel like duh exam nuh’ so I seh, I spoke to them and seh we need to get our exam together and just finish up for the week. I see over on his desk you have a candle burning as well? Yes, we put it on this morning just to show a symbol that yuh know, he’s a yuh know we gonna miss him our staff we gonna miss him.”

Marin said that he was a polite and bright student:

“In class he’s very quiet not a troublemaker; he does his work and comes to school almost every day. I don’t have a problem with him in class.”

My heart goes out to the family of young Byron. It is time to protect our children by having all buses in BELIZE FLASH LIGHTS WHEN STOPPED AND TO HAVE ENFORCEMENT OF LAWS FOR THOSE DRIVERS WHO DON’T RESPECT THESE LAWS.

My sympathy goes out to the family. This is so sad. However, at the same time I’m thinking how this could have happened; was the bus driver in violation not following proper procedure letting kids off the bus? Did Ms. Flamenco the defendant ignore warning signs? Or, is there any procedure that states how the kids must be exited? I will recommend that Transportation Department (GOB) looks into this situation or revamp there procedures ASAP. 1. Children must never walk behind buses, and 2. Stop signs/flashing lights should be place on buses to alert motorist that children are exiting the buses.

This is really a sad tragedy! I know its very easy to blame the driver but I am a driver and constantly on the highway and I can tell you that many time children and adults have this bad habit of jumping off a bus and running in front or behind the bus right across the street. That should not happen. When you get off a bus you need to wait for that bus to drive off and be gone so you can see right and left before you cross any bus and parents need to teach their children this. Many times the bus drivers are the ones who spoil the commuters by stopping them ever 10 seconds to get down anywhere they please. There needs to be proper bus stops on these highways and in the country on a whole. I can totally relate to this driver coming from the opposite direction on a highway it has happen to me before where out of no where someone dashes out behind the bus. I am so sad for this little angel and his family but this could have been avoided with the proper education and bus stop rules.

Thank God Jehovah… Give me a break. The driver of that bus should get life in prison. When a bus stops all vehicels should stop for them to cross the road. What a sad tragedy for this family.

VERY SAD STORY INDEED IT’S VERY HURTING TO SEE A YOUNG KID SHORT LIVED BY AN ACCIDENT LIKE THESE. THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THIS KIND OF DEATHS BUT FORTHE MEAN TIME LETS BE POLITE WITH THE GRIEVING FAMILY AND LET THE LAW HAVE THE LADY AND THE BUS DRIVER PROCESS ACCORDINGLY AS IT SHOULD BE. R.I.P MY LITTLE BELIZEAN BROTHER YOUR FAMILY AND THE COUNTRY WILL MISS YOU SINCE YOU WE’RE SOMEONE IN LIFE AND WILL BE IN OUR HEARTS ALSO. VERY TOUCHING.

my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family also to the bus driver and the lady that killed the kid i am sure if they both have a heart that this will bother them.I was in a situation where i had hit a teenager in Los Angeles again this was a teenager and she did the same thing ran out of nowhere luckily she didn’t die but she was badly injured and trust me i had sleepless nights it bothered me for a very long time, its a shame that such a promising student had to get his life cut short.RIP Byron you are now an Angel in Heaven.@ Crazy you are right and we as parents need to teach our children the rules of crossing the road.In California the bus driver is responsible to make sure the kids cross the street safe.Drivers please remember pedestrians always come first we all need to be careful everytime we get in the driver seat follow road rules and SAVE a LIFE.

My heart goes out to the family.. i know the pain they are feeling…. I lost a brother the same way and although it’s been 17 years it still hurts like hell. God watches over all of us and he’s always there when we need him. The Traffic law needs to be enforced is this country, too many accidents like this are happening and there’s nothing being done about it…..May he rest in peace

  9. snucums says:

This lady who kill this little boy should be charged for jail sentence.. she was careless.. dont you know when a bus stops u should never over take the bus becuz u never know who who will juz jump out and cross the street… Belize needs to get more strict with these kinda $#!%.. it pisses me off that a innocent child had to die when he didnt have too.. My heart goes out to the family and friends. I know its not easy to lose a loved one but just remember God takes only the best.. He has a better plan for your baby boy in heaven.. I learned that no matter how much it hurts you should never question Gods will.. God be with this family through there hard time…
