Pregnant woman and accused rapist among 6 charged with burglary

Kerrisha McCauley

Six persons, including a pregnant woman and an accused rapist, were remanded to prison today for a series of burglaries in the Lake Independence and Belama areas. On Friday, police searches at a numbers of houses and a pawn shop led to the recovery of a huge stash of stolen items. Twenty-two year old Leroy Gomez, twenty-one year olds Ernest Staine and Benua Andrews, twenty-eight year old Taletha Cruickshank, and twenty year old Kerrisha McCauley were all charged with Burglary and Handling Stolen Goods.

Leroy Gomez

Gomez’ girlfriend, twenty year old Julia Welch, was only charged with Handling Stolen Goods.  The burglaries occurred between May twenty-eighth and June seventh at the homes of Andrew Young, Kim Burgess as well as Marisol and Dominga Martinez. All six accused persons pleaded not guilty, but prosecutor, Sergeant Carol Tucker, objected to bail on the grounds that there were multiple victims, some of the items had been pawned and police investigations may lead to further charges.  Chief Magistrate Margaret McKenzie upheld the objection and remanded them to the Belize Central Prison until July when bail will be considered.
