New face on the panel of judges at the Court of Appeal

Douglas Mendes

There’s a new face on the panel of judges at the Court of Appeal and he hails from Trinidad and Tobago.  Senior Counsel Douglas Mendes was today sworn in as a Justice of the Belize Court of Appeal by Governor General Sir Colville Young at Belize House in Belmopan. According to a government release, Mendes has a distinguished legal career dating back to 1985 when he graduated from Sir Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad. He has practiced widely in the Caribbean and acted as a Supreme Court Judge in Trinidad and Tobago for a short period in 1998. Justice Mendes is also a part-time lecturer at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus and has published notable articles in law journals. A familiar face also returned to the panel of judges today. Justice Boyd Carey, who retired in March 2010, was sworn in as a temporary Justice of Appeal for the current session of the Court, which is expected to run until June twenty-fourth. Justices Mendes and Carey join Justice Dennis Morrison, Brian Alleyne and Court of Appeal President, Justice Manuel Sosa.
