Bus Association drives up the rhetoric against transport industry woes

Thomas Shaw

During the Prime Minister’s second quarterly press conference on Wednesday, he addressed a myriad of issues, including the current state of the transportation industry.  But while Barrow may have painted a wonderful picture of an agreed solution to the transportation crisis, today the Belizean Bus Association (BBA) held its own media briefing to offer a totally different impression of what is taking place.  Unlike previous meetings, today’s gathering lacked the support of a majority of bus operators.  The Belize Bus Owners Cooperative and other major operators were not at the press conference.  Instead, flanked by members of Belizeans for Justice and San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi and chaired by COLA‘s Moses Sulph, BBA President Thomas Shaw and his firebrand spokesman Patrick Menzies challenged the Belizean public to stand up against what they believe is corruption within the current administration.

Thomas Shaw, President, Belizean Bus Association

“At the press conference that was held by the prime minister he gave the nation the impression that all was well and everybody was satisfied. But as the president, I had stated that just one operator of the north, solely Mister Froylan Gilharry, was part of the BBA which is a lie. We have other operators who are under the BBA. Personally I am not here to create a problem, we’re here to solve a problem. What have been taking place is that these guys have been offered runs that they didn’t really applied for and the ones that were satisfied with what they got were the newcomers that actually got into the industry. And I must say that’s why we are up here today to sensitize the public and to let them know exactly what is actually taking place. We have reached this point because once again the amateurs, the politicians, have sought to fix what was not broken. To interfere where they had no business, to impose without consultation, to dictate in what should be a democracy. And why is that? It is done solely for greed to suit another political agenda. To create to the political crony in total disagreement for the welfare of the tens of thousands of commuters, workers, owners, operators whose livelihood are being jeopardize. We are saying to the prime minister; come sit down and discuss this matter in good faith.”

Patrick Menzies

Patrick Menzies, Spokesperson, BBA

“Belize is not a democracy. Belize is a tyrannical system cloaked in a robe of democracy. I call and I mentioned it in the press and I’ll say it again; if in eighteen days, the people of Egypt could overthrow a dictatorship that oppressed them for thirty years, Belize it’s almost thirty years—the oppression is about to be over. I heard they are trying to apply their political victimization to me. Come on. The bottom line is this; you pay attention to the people of the country. Belizeans have had it. It has nothing to do with Menzies; I’ve only been here for a few months, about a year and half. But Belizeans are now seeing the reality on the ground. You’ve been living it, you’ve been suffering in it and it is time that the spark that was lit a couple of weeks ago go as far as it needs to go. The blatant cronyism that has caused this impasse today in the transport industry has not only affected the buses; it’s affected the water taxis, the regular taxis, the citrus industry, the school runs, the sugar industry, the justice for some and injustice for most systems. The blatantly bias judiciary, the land for votes and citizenship for votes mentality, and the list goes on and on and on. And Belizeans have been living it. I challenge Belizeans in the south to look at the standard that is set up north when the cane farmers are touched by this cronyistic attitude of the past and present governments. You must stand up.”

Moses Sulph

Moses Sulph, President, COLA

“I am saying if this government is not serving the people then our people should move to civil disobedience. The organizations here didn’t create the high gas prices, we did not create twenty-three percent of unemployment, we did not create forty-four percent poverty rate, we did not create all the problem in the industries—in the bus industry, in the cane farmers industry. The government is responsible to implement system in place—you mister Barrow are the one responsible not these organizations. These organizations are check and balances to keep your government in check and make sure you carry out what you were elected to do. We are not an enemy of the government; we are simply an organization that is holding government accountable of what they ought to do. So if we have to move to the same thing that you demanded in 2005—that people move to civil disobedience because the government is not listening, you can bring your security forces. But you are not going to serve the people or the people of this country is going to rise up the same way in that same effort to save our country. So you best believe if you are not going to listen to the people of this country, the people of this country will move to civil disobedience.”

Despite the lengthy meeting held this morning, the BBA has still not offered a direction in which the dispute is heading only to say that it will not disclose its next step.

Let me tell you something, you facey you know. Belize may be corrupted, but IDK what you are thinking because The United States is no better. So if you try to turn Belize into a a place full of civil disobedience, WHO IS GOING TO RUN THE COUNTRY. First of all, you and your funky group is out there protesting for squatters rights and you need to protest for people who are looking for homes and staying in other people’s homes. You are sooooooo FAKE. You have the bloody nerve fi deh taaak bout barrow and in 2005 you wanted Musa out of Belize. Let me guess, you want all those people out so you can become minister of Belize and tief just like everybody else. And you need not to talk about me because I HAVE A BACHELORS DEGREE IN MARKETING SO DONT EVEN SAY THAT I AM IGNORANT. You are starting problem in our country and you need to get the hell out. Left fu we place yer, cuzzz u deh staaat lone fool. IDK whats wrong with you people, GET THE EFF OUT OF BELIZE FOOLS. U DEH STAAAT PROBLEM AND DEN U WAH GET PIPPLE HURT, GET OUT

It is true that Barrow, now PM, in 2005 called on the citizens of this country to go on a sustained civil disobedience because of his opposition to the then PUP government in the first place , much more than to the needs of the people. He was in the forefront and made demands of the government. Now, He, is in government but to him anyone who stands up for their rights are traitors, troublemakers and anti-nationalists.

If he believed then in 2005 that the people had a right to protest why is it that now that he is in power he sends armed security forces on people? People always will have the right to protest the policies or actions of any government. But, to Barrow, this is not correct in his mind.

What a difference in thinking. So I ask myself..Was Barrow real caring about the Belizean people in 2005 or was he hunger for power?

Tough speech. I truely hope I’m mistaken but these guys are in for a rude awakening. Was not Sulph one of those who lay with Barrow in his political bed to demonize Mr. Musa?. I said it in Feb. of 2008 and often repeated it to Ch’oc, to the union senator and now to Sulph:” IF YOU GUYS ALONG WITH MR. BARROW ACTED IN GOOD AND HONEST FAITH THEN, MAY YOU GUYS ENJOY EACH OTHER BUT IF NOT, MAY FIRE COME OUT OF MR. BARROW AND DEVOUR YOU ALL AND, FLAMES COME OUT OF YOU ALL AND CONSUME MR. BARROW.”(Judges 9: 19-20). The majority including Mr. Shaw, voted UDP. Therefore, like it or not, I also have to take ownership of Mr. Barrow. Barrow we wanted, Barrow we have. Mr. Shaw, you squandered the element of surprise and were not able to gather momentum. Mr. Barrow has already divided you all. Your phone may already been tapered with and by now, you may be under surveillance. You will not catch the man with his pants down again. I strongly suggest you beat retreat. Mr. Menzies, you do not make threats much-less give ultimatums, unless you have the force, the willingness to use it and the stomach to digest the consequences. Have you ever seen combat?, have you ever killed someone? have you ever had a dear comrade die in your arms?. I have, and let me tell you there is nothing in it to feel proud about. A good leader do not agitate, nor speak rash and does not make headstrong decisions that endanger lives, specially innocent lives. In a peaceful civil disobedience people can get hurt and, once stones are thrown and punches begin to be exchanged, it is no more peaceful but violent and from there, govt. has the legal authority to use whatever force necessary to restore peace and order. Gentlemen, do you command sufficient respect and authority to keep the protesters under control even under harrassment?. If not, what are your contingency plans?. If we have another Mr. Gutierrez (Tower Hill), how are you going to face the family?.

  4. Belizean says:

Mister Moses, SHUT UP. Dean Barrow has NOT messed up everything. Its the People who are in charge of EACH business that mess up. Then they come running to Dean Barrow and say, Fix this mess or we shut down. Then it becomes his problem, but who are the crazy people who created the problem?? The CEO’s who don’t know how to handle and invest money correctly.

  5. Mr,Minister says:

come on people how can we forget wat Barrow did when he headed the protest he then as how Cardona says his dream of becoming the first black PM,his dreams came true and he forgot who put him deh he now use us as his foot stools wake up Belizeans run Barrow and his dictators

  6. CLEANHEART says:

WHY ALL THESE FUSS ABOUT BUSES? I WANT TO ASK THESE PEOPLE WITH THEIR CHILDISH BEHAVIOR, NAMELY, MOSES SULPH, PATRICK MENZIES, AND THOMAS SHAW TO PLEASE RIDE IN PUBLIC BUSES FOR ONE WEEK ONLY ONE WEEK, I NEED FOR THESE PEOPLE TO EXPERIENCE WHAT WE THE COMMUTERS HAVE TO GO THROUGH TO REACH OUR DESTINATION, I STILL CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE FIGHTING OVER, SOMETIMES I GET THE IMPRESSION THERE IS SOME HIDDEN AGENDA BEHIND THEIR CHILDISH BEHAVIOR,
I WANT ASK THEM IF THEY ARE FOR THE PEOPLE, WHY CAN’T THEY LISTEN TO OUR VOICES, WE NEED MORE BUSES ON THE ROAD, WE NEED BUSES TO LEAVE THE TERMINAL EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES, NOT EVERY HOUR, I WONDER IF THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT KNOW WHAT WE THE PEOPLE FEELS WHEN HAVING TO BOARD A BUS.
AT THE BEGINNING I SYMPATHIZE WITH THEM BUT NOW THEY ARE GOING TO FAR, IT MAKES ME FEELS THEY ARE JUST GREEDY AND WANTS ALL THE RUN FOR THEMSELVES. WHAT IS IT THAT THEY ARE CONFUSED OVER, THE GOVERNMENT HAVE ALREADY GIVEN THEM THE RUNS THEY WANTED, NOW THEY WANT SOMETHING ELSE, THEY ARE BEING SET UP THE OPPOSITION I AM SURE OF THAT NOW, AND ITS JUST A PITY BECAUSE AT THE END WE THE PEOPLE SUFFER WITH LESS BUSES ON THE ROAD.
UNTIL SOMEBODY GETS REALLY HURT WHILE PUSHING TO GET IN A BUS, THEY WILL SURELY REALIZE WE NEED MORE BUSES, THOMAS SHAW INSTEAD OF YOU LEFT YOURSELF BEING USE AS A SCAPEGOAT FOR THE OPPOSITION I WOULD STRONGLY ADVICE YOU TO GO SERVICE YOUR BUSES THAT ALWAYS BROKE DOWN ON THE ROAD OK, PLEASE, WE THE PEOPLE ARE GETTING TIRED OF YOUR NONSENSE.
